Spiro is expanding into Ghana with the launch of the Ekon 450 M1 V3 electric motorcycle and its battery-swapping solution, targeting commercial riders and delivery fleets in the country.

The company said riders could exchange depleted batteries for charged ones at its swapping stations in about two minutes. The offering could help riders save up to US$2 per day in operating costs compared with petrol-powered motorcycles, according to Spiro.

The Ekon 450 M1 V3 is being positioned as an alternative to conventional motorcycles for everyday transport and commercial use. Its battery-swapping system is intended to reduce the time riders spend off the road waiting for their vehicles to recharge.

Spiro Begins Customer Outreach Across Greater Accra

Spiro is conducting test rides and product demonstrations across Greater Accra to introduce the motorcycle and demonstrate its battery-swapping technology to prospective customers.

Auroasish Choudhuri, managing director for Central and West Africa at Spiro, said the company plans to develop its local operations through partnerships and by adapting its offering to riders’ requirements.

Kaushik Burman, CEO of Mobility at Spiro, said Ghana’s two-wheeler market and demand from commercial riders and delivery fleets presented an opportunity for electric motorcycles. He added that the company’s approach combines vehicles with battery-swapping infrastructure to address operating costs and charging access.

Maxwell Dodd, managing director of Spiro Ghana, said the company expects lower operating costs and less downtime to be key considerations for riders evaluating electric motorcycles.

Spiro Plans Expansion Into More African Markets

Ghana is part of Spiro’s broader expansion strategy across Africa. The company recently secured US$270 million in equity funding and an additional US$18 million in debt financing from the Africa Go Green Fund.

Spiro aims to establish operations in 20 African markets and is preparing to enter Ethiopia, Malawi, Mali and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The company said it operates in seven African countries, with more than 156,000 electric motorcycles and over 2,500 battery-swapping stations. Its network also includes 11 mega swap stations in Kenya and Rwanda. Spiro reported that its network had completed more than 57 million battery swaps.
