Sona Comstar’s Earnings Signal a Shift from Components to Systems

Sona BLW Precision Forgings Ltd (Sona Comstar) is increasingly signalling a strategic shift from being a pure-play component supplier to a systems-oriented mobility technology company, with its latest earnings underscoring both the direction and the pace of this transition. For FY26, the company reported revenue of ₹4,475 crore, up 26% year-on-year, while EBITDA rose 13% to ₹1,107 crore. Margins moderated to 24.7%, reflecting an adverse product mix and higher costs.

While the company reported strong growth for FY26, the underlying mix of business offers a more important takeaway. Electrification-linked revenues now form a significant share of its portfolio, and with a large portion of its orderbook tied to EV programmes, the shift in product and technology focus is becoming more visible.

For instance, while traditional products such as differential gears or starter motors represent standalone mechanical components, newer offerings like integrated motor controllers or e-axle systems combine mechanical, electrical and electronic functions into a single solution, marking a clear move up the value chain. This transition is also reflected in the company’s expanding EV programme base and technology roadmap.

From Parts to Integrated Solutions

At the core of this transition is a deliberate move up the value chain. Traditionally known for drivetrain components, Sona Comstar is expanding into integrated systems that combine hardware with electronics and embedded control.

The company’s technology roadmap highlights this shift, with a portfolio spanning integrated motor controllers, traction motors, radar sensors and e-axle solutions, alongside emerging applications such as propulsion systems for eVTOL platforms and drive units for autonomous mobile robots.

This marks a broader evolution from supplying individual parts to enabling subsystem-level and, over time, system-level capabilities, aligning with the industry’s transition towards electrified and software-defined vehicles.

Electrification is emerging as the primary enabler of this strategic move. In Q4 FY26, battery electric vehicle (BEV) revenue accounted for 39% of Sona Comstar’s automotive product revenue, while for the full year the share stood at around 35%.

In parallel, the company has built a sizeable pipeline of EV programmes across global customers, with 67 EV programmes across 35 customers, strengthening its medium-term visibility and deepening OEM integration.

Growth Strong, Margins Under Pressure

The fourth quarter saw revenue grow 47% year-on-year, with EBITDA up 32%, although margin pressures persisted due to commodity inflation and mix-related factors.

While these pressures remain a near-term watchpoint, they also reflect the ongoing transition as the company scales newer, more complex product lines.

A Broader Repositioning

Beyond automotive, Sona Comstar is also expanding into segments such as railways and industrial applications, further diversifying its portfolio. Its net orderbook stands at ₹23,700 crore, equivalent to over five times its annual revenue, providing long-term visibility and reinforcing the scale of its ongoing transformation.

Taken together, the company’s earnings indicate more than just growth in volumes. They point to a broader repositioning, where Sona Comstar is aligning itself with the next phase of mobility, one that is increasingly defined by electrification, electronics and integrated systems.
