Skoda Lines up Diesel Superb Comeback in India

Skoda Auto is planning to bring the diesel-powered Superb back to India, according to people familiar with the matter.

The flagship sedan is expected to be imported as a completely built unit (CBU) and positioned at the top of Skoda’s Indian range. The portfolio currently starts with the Kylaq and extends to the Kushaq, Slavia and Kodiaq.

The move would mark the return of diesel to Skoda’s line-up in India. The carmaker discontinued diesel vehicles ahead of the transition to BS6 emission norms in 2020 and currently sells only petrol-powered models in the country.

A diesel engine could strengthen the Superb’s appeal among buyers looking for a large sedan suited to long-distance travel. The model is expected to remain a low-volume import, with its role focused as much on strengthening the brand as generating sales.

The Superb has played an important part in establishing Skoda’s premium image during its 25 years in India. Its return would give existing customers an upgrade within the brand and add a large sedan to a portfolio increasingly led by SUVs.

It would also allow dealers to address a wider price band and reach customers beyond Skoda’s mainstream models. The company is preparing its next set of products for India as it seeks to build on the Kylaq’s entry into the high-volume sub-four-metre SUV segment.

The Superb diesel is expected to form part of a wider product strategy aimed at covering more segments and offering customers a broader choice of powertrains. Its return would give Skoda a differentiated offering in a market where the number of large diesel sedans has declined sharply.
