Skoda Auto is evaluating exports of the India-developed Kylaq compact SUV to Europe, a move that could give its Indian operations a larger role in the carmaker’s global product strategy and create a lower-priced crossover alternative to the Fabia hatchback.
The proposal is at an early stage, with the company examining European homologation requirements, emissions compliance and the choice of engine.
“We’re looking into a possibility or an opportunity to bring Kylaq to Europe, but there are a lot of barriers, a lot of homologation questions,” Skoda Auto Chief Executive Klaus Zellmer told our sister publication Autocar India.
Skoda also sees a possible business case for positioning the Kylaq below the Fabia in Europe, where the withdrawal of several small cars has reduced the availability of affordable entry-level models. Zellmer has said the wide price difference between the India-made Kylaq and the Fabia provides a business rationale worth examining.
The Kylaq is Škoda’s first sub-four-metre SUV and its third locally developed model under the Volkswagen Group’s India 2.0 programme, after the Kushaq and Slavia. It is based on the localised MQB-A0-IN platform and manufactured at Škoda Auto Volkswagen India’s Chakan plant near Pune.
Kylaq becomes Skoda’s volume driver
The export consideration comes after the Kylaq helped Skoda enter one of India’s largest and most competitive passenger vehicle categories.
According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, Skoda sold 46,872 Kylaqs in calendar year 2025. The model accounted for about 64% of the company’s Indian sales of 72,666 vehicles during the year and helped Skoda’s volumes more than double.
The Kylaq crossed 50,000 cumulative sales in February 2026, about a year after deliveries began.
Skoda’s overall sales in India increased 7.5% year on year to 38,894 units in the first half of 2026. The company said the Kylaq continued to provide its core volumes, supported by the Kushaq, Slavia and Kodiaq.
The Kylaq competes with the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and Mahindra XUV 3XO.
India’s sub-four-metre SUV market expanded 6.3% to around 1.29 million units in FY26. The Kylaq sold 49,089 units during the year, giving it a share of about 3.8% of the segment. The Tata Nexon led the category, followed by the Tata Punch, Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Fronx.
While the Kylaq remains a relatively small player compared with the segment leaders, it has broadened Skoda’s customer base and given the company access to a volume category that was not covered by the larger Kushaq and Slavia.
Engine Choice Poses Challenge
The India-spec Kylaq is powered by a locally manufactured 115hp, 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. It is offered with six-speed manual and torque-converter automatic transmissions.
For Europe, Skoda is considering whether to upgrade this engine to meet Euro 7 requirements or use its 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TSI engine.
The 1.5 TSI, which produces 150hp in the India-spec Kushaq and Slavia and is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, offers a simpler route to Euro 7 compliance. However, key components of the engine are imported and assembled in India, making it costlier than the highly localised 1.0 TSI.
Skoda could use the 1.5 TSI in a lower state of tune for the European Kylaq to manage performance, fuel consumption and fleet emissions. However, this would raise the vehicle’s upfront cost and could reduce the price advantage central to its proposed European positioning.
The alternative would be to invest in upgrading the 1.0 TSI for Euro 7. In that case, Skoda could also consider the eight-speed automatic transmission introduced with the updated Kushaq in India.
The final powertrain decision will depend on development costs, emission targets, expected European volumes and the price at which Skoda can position the vehicle.
India-EU FTA could Support Business Case
The India-EU Free Trade Agreement could also support the Kylaq’s export business case, although its impact will depend on the tariff schedule, rules of origin and the completion of legal and ratification processes.
India and the European Union announced the conclusion of the trade agreement in January 2026. The Indian government said the pact would provide wider market access for Indian exports and strengthen the country’s integration with European supply chains.
The agreement is not yet in force and will require legal formalities and ratification.
A weaker rupee against the euro could provide another advantage by improving the cost competitiveness of vehicles manufactured in India. However, those gains would have to offset the cost of European homologation, additional equipment, logistics and the possible use of the more expensive 1.5 TSI engine.
The Kylaq was originally developed for Indian regulations, customer preferences and the country’s small-car tax structure. Exporting it to Europe would therefore require more than a change in powertrain. Skoda would also have to examine European safety, emissions, equipment and quality requirements.
A final decision has not been taken. However, a European programme would mark a significant step for Skoda Auto Volkswagen India by moving the country’s role beyond developing and manufacturing vehicles for India and other emerging markets to supplying a product to the carmaker’s home region.
