Skoda Auto Volkswagen India is fast-tracking an internal three-year restructuring initiative that will downsize its domestic workforce by approximately 12%, according to a report by Bloomberg citing people familiar with the matter.
The staff reductions, which initially began in 2025, are now scheduled to take place in faster phases running through 2027. The rationalisation program is projected to eliminate several hundred positions across both corporate white-collar roles and factory-floor manufacturing operations.
Why Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Is Restructuring
The primary objective of the exercise is to lower operational expenditure by tens of millions of dollars before the Volkswagen Group initiates its next capital investment and product cycle in India, which will feature next-generation architectures including a new electric vehicle. The German automotive group is seeking to secure a leaner operational base after facing volume and scale constraints in a market largely controlled by Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai Motor India, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra.
Piyush Arora on the Workforce Optimisation Plan
Addressing the development, Piyush Arora, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, said, "While we do not comment on speculative figures regarding our workforce, our ongoing efforts to optimize operations across our Indian business units continue to gain momentum."
Arora added that the enterprise intends to expand its local technical engineering units and reinforce capital commitments in India as an export, engineering, and manufacturing base for the group.
Global Volkswagen Cost Cuts and JSW Equity Talks
According to Bloomberg, the India-specific realignment operates independently of group chief executive Oliver Blume's global cost-reduction program. The worldwide plan includes shedding an additional 50,000 jobs, reducing the international vehicle portfolio by 50% by 2035, and lowering capital expenditures by 16% across the 2027 to 2031 window.
The workforce cuts also coincide with ongoing negotiations regarding the group's local equity structure. Skoda Auto Volkswagen India has been in discussions with the JSW Group concerning an equity partnership to inject new domestic capital into the operation.
