The Shriram Group, a financial conglomerate in India, announced the establishment of the “Shriram Group RT Chair in Computational Mechanics” at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.
The Shriram Group was founded in 1974 by R. Thyagarajan, who is referred to as RT. Mr. Thyagarajan holds undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in mathematics, as well as a Master’s in Mathematical Statistics from the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata.
The Shriram Group, active in the financial services sector, has focused on serving the general population and promoting financial empowerment. Over time, it has developed into a well-known financial services conglomerate.
The establishment of this Chair at IISc aligns with the group’s ongoing efforts to contribute to academic and research excellence. This initiative also coincides with its 50th anniversary celebrations.
Umesh Revankar, Executive Vice Chairman of Shriram Finance, commented on the collaboration, highlighting the significance of partnering with IISc, a leading institution for scientific research and education in India. He noted that the Chair aims to promote innovation and advance knowledge in computational mechanics, benefiting both academia and industry.
The Chair will be awarded to distinguished faculty members conducting research in computational mechanics. The goal is to support research in areas such as mechanical, electrical, electronic, and computational sciences.
The appointed Chair, at the associate or full professor level, will focus on applying computational methods to address practical challenges. Research areas may include developing new numerical methods, data-driven modeling of physical phenomena, and exploring emerging computing paradigms like quantum computing.
This collaboration is expected to benefit the academic community and contribute to practical applications in computational mechanics. It also aims to inspire future researchers and professionals in the field.
