Jaguar Land Rover has launched the Range Rover Electric in India, marking the brand's first entry into the full battery-electric vehicle segment after more than five decades of producing combustion and hybrid-powered SUVs.
The vehicle is powered by two 260 kW permanent magnet electric motors producing a combined output of 405 kW and 850 Nm of torque — figures JLR says are comparable to a petrol V8 in terms of power delivery. The 0–100 km/h sprint is rated at 4.5 seconds, while overtaking acceleration from 80–120 km/h takes as little as 2.7 seconds. The motors use silicon carbide semiconductors, which JLR says enable switching speeds measured in microseconds, improving efficiency across a range of driving conditions.
The battery is a 118.5 kWh lithium-ion double-stack unit consisting of 344 prismatic cells, built on an 800-volt architecture. JLR claims a WLTP-rated range of up to 600 km on a full charge, with a real-world estimate of approximately 535 km under standardised conditions. Using a 350 kW DC fast charger — the fastest currently available in public networks — the vehicle can charge from 10–80% in approximately 22 minutes, or recover 220 km of range in 10 minutes. The 800-volt system also supports split-charging capability, giving owners added flexibility in how they manage charging.
On the capability side, a traction management system called Integrated Traction Management (ITM) controls motor response within 50 milliseconds, which JLR says is 100 times faster than a comparable combustion engine system. Working alongside ITM is Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD), which distributes rear torque between 100% and zero to prevent loss of traction across surfaces.
The vehicle can wade through up to 900 mm of water and, using single-pedal driving mode, can pull away smoothly on slopes of up to 33 degrees and complete rolling climbs on gradients of up to 45 degrees. A twin-chamber air suspension system and a lower centre of gravity compared to previous Range Rover models are also cited as contributing to handling stability.
JLR has filed over 300 patent applications in connection with the Range Rover Electric — more than for any previous vehicle in the brand's history. Among these is the ThermAssist heat management system, which optimises driving range, charging speeds, and battery performance in extreme temperatures.
JLR says the system can add up to 40 km of range and reduce heating energy use by 40%. Each vehicle also comes equipped with a Battery Digital Twin, a monitoring system that tracks over 900 diagnostic data points. Combined with JLR's over-the-air software update capability, the system is designed to allow proactive vehicle maintenance without requiring a workshop visit.
The vehicle underwent extensive testing before launch, accumulating over 1.5 million kilometres of physical testing across locations including Arjeplog in Sweden at temperatures as low as -40°C, the Dubai desert, and JLR's own Eastnor Castle facility in the UK. More than 250,000 hours of virtual testing were also conducted — a figure JLR describes as exceeding that of any previous Range Rover model. Battery safety was assessed through multi-axis vibration and shock testing across a temperature range of -40°C to +90°C, with the cells housed in a high-strength aluminium enclosure.
The Range Rover Electric is manufactured at JLR's Solihull plant in the UK, the same facility that has produced Range Rovers since 1970. To support the transition to electric vehicle production, JLR has retrained 9,000 manufacturing employees at Solihull for electrification processes, with a further 1,500 staff trained across its broader West Midlands operations.
Battery packs and electric drive units are produced at JLR's Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton, which the company describes as the UK's largest facility combining internal combustion engine and electric powertrain production. The Wolverhampton site's first phase of redevelopment spans 40,000 square metres and required over two million hours of planning and construction over four years. Quality control during manufacturing uses AI-enabled scanning cameras, and every battery cell is individually performance-tested before assembly.
The propulsion system carries an eight-year or 160,000 km warranty, though JLR notes exact terms may vary by market. Owners can also manage several vehicle functions remotely through the Range Rover app, including cabin pre-conditioning, steering wheel heating, charge status monitoring, and live vehicle location tracking.
Orders are open in India across several configurations: short wheelbase in Autobiography trim, and long-wheelbase variants in SV, SV Ultra, and SV Black. A First Edition trim is also available in three exterior colours — Belgravia Green, Santorini Black, and Varesine Blue — with a Light Cloud Ultrafabrics and Kvadrat interior. For buyers seeking further personalisation, JLR's Bespoke commissioning service offers custom paint colours, materials, and detailing options including embroidery.
Range Rover, established in 1970, is sold across 121 countries and sits within JLR's portfolio of British automotive brands. The Range Rover Electric joins existing mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and internal combustion engine models built on the same platform architecture at Solihull, reflecting what JLR describes as a flexible propulsion strategy rather than an abrupt shift away from other powertrains. The wider Range Rover lineup — which includes the Sport, Velar, and Evoque — is positioned to offer fully electric variants across the range before 2030.
