Passenger vehicle (PV) retail sales stood at 4,07,355 units in April 2026, reflecting a 12.21% year-on-year increase and marking the highest-ever April for the segment, according to Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) data.

On a month-on-month basis, PV sales declined 7.45% from March levels, aligning with seasonal moderation following strong fiscal year-end dispatches.

A key trend during the month was the continued outperformance of rural markets, which grew 20.40% YoY compared to urban growth of 7.11%. This indicates a sustained broadening of demand into Tier-3 and rural regions, supported by improved affordability and financing conditions.

The segment continues to exhibit a mixed demand profile. While SUVs remain dominant, there are signs of recovery in the small-car segment. Fuel mix data shows petrol/ethanol vehicles accounting for 45.95% of sales, followed by CNG at 22.62%, diesel at 17.39%, hybrid at 8.27% and EVs at 5.77%, reflecting a gradual shift towards alternative powertrains.

Inventory levels increased slightly to 28–30 days, compared to around 28 days in March, but remain within the acceptable range. Dealer bodies have indicated the importance of maintaining disciplined dispatches as the market transitions into a seasonally softer phase.

Demand during the month was supported by the ongoing marriage season, improved EMI affordability due to a supportive interest rate environment, and continued product refresh cycles.
