Oil India Limited has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (CSIR-IMMT) to undertake joint research and development (R&D) projects in the critical minerals sector.

According to the statement, the agreement is intended to facilitate joint R&D initiatives in areas related to critical minerals, in line with priorities outlined under the NCMM, National Critical Mineral Mission. The partnership is expected to focus on advancing technical capabilities and supporting India’s broader efforts to secure access to strategic mineral resources.

CSIR-IMMT has been designated as a Centre of Excellence for critical minerals under the NCMM. The collaboration is aligned with the mission’s objectives to strengthen domestic capabilities in the exploration, processing and utilisation of critical mineral resources.

The MoU was signed by the Director (Exploration & Development) of Oil India Limited and the Director of CSIR-IMMT. The signing ceremony was held in the presence of the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Oil India, along with functional directors, senior officials from the company, and scientists from CSIR-IMMT.

The National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) is a government initiative aimed at strengthening India’s access to critical minerals essential for sectors such as clean energy, electronics, defence and electric mobility. It focuses on enhancing domestic exploration, mining, processing and recycling capabilities while reducing import dependence. The mission also promotes research and development, international partnerships and private sector participation across the value chain.

By identifying and prioritising key minerals like lithium, cobalt and rare earth elements, NCMM seeks to build a resilient supply ecosystem and support India’s long-term industrial growth, energy transition and strategic security objectives.
