On the occasion of World Sustainable Transport Day on November 26, 2023, Odisha is taking strides towards transforming rural transport with the launch of the Location Accessible Multi-modal Initiative (LAccMI) scheme.
Under the LAccMI scheme, the Odisha state government is set to operate 1,623 buses in rural areas, backed by a substantial budget of Rs 3,178 crore. This initiative aligns with the broader sustainable transport vision of the Indian government, as reflected in initiatives like the National Electric Mobility Mission 2022 and the FAME India Scheme.
The LAccMI scheme is a pivotal step in enhancing rural travel, establishing crucial connections from Gram Panchayats to Blocks and Blocks to District Headquarters. The overarching goal is to provide affordable access to essential services and opportunities for communities. The impact is vast, reaching 62,291 educational institutions and potentially generating 37,652 direct and indirect employment opportunities. The projected revenue generation of Rs 4,500 crore over the next five years indicates not just a transportation revolution but a significant economic boost.
In addition to its economic impact, LAccMI contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in economic development, industrial innovation, infrastructure enhancement, sustainable urban community development, and the promotion of responsible consumption and production practices. Furthermore, the initiative opens up avenues for rural tourism, connecting scenic sites like Bonda Hills and Mahendragiri.
What sets this initiative apart is the active involvement of women's Self-Help Groups associated with Mission Shakti. These groups play a multifaceted role, acting as conductors on the buses, overseeing fare collection and maintaining cleanliness. Beyond these responsibilities, they become agents of women's empowerment and community welfare, making the LAccMI scheme not just a transportation solution but a holistic approach to sustainable development.
