NXP Semiconductors unveiled its third-generation S32R47 imaging radar processors today, designed to address the demanding requirements of Level 2+ to Level 4 autonomous driving systems. The new processors, built on 16 nm FinFET technology, deliver up to twice the processing power of previous generations while improving system cost and power efficiency.
The S32R47 family enables imaging radars to generate denser point clouds with enhanced resolution, allowing vehicles to better detect vulnerable road users and unexpected obstacles like lost cargo—critical capabilities for advanced autonomous driving features.
"The S32R47 can efficiently process three times, or more, antenna channels in real time than today's production solutions," said Meindert van den Beld, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Radar & ADAS at NXP. "It enables improved imaging radar resolution, sensitivity and dynamic range required by demanding autonomous driving use cases, while still meeting stringent power and system cost targets set by OEMs for volume production."
According to industry research from Yole Intelligence, approximately 40% of new passenger vehicles will feature driving automation Level 2+ or higher by 2029. This rapid growth in autonomous driving capabilities is driving demand for more sophisticated radar systems that can function reliably in challenging conditions, including complex urban environments.
The new processors achieve comparable or better performance with up to 89% fewer antenna channels than alternative solutions, addressing integration challenges by reducing system cost, size, and power consumption. The technology also includes support for artificial intelligence and machine learning features, enhancing direction-of-arrival processing and object classification capabilities.
NXP's solution is part of a comprehensive, scalable portfolio of radar sensing technologies covering applications from corner radar to high-resolution 4D imaging radar. The platform offers a common architecture for software reuse and development efficiency, along with a high-performance hardware security engine, over-the-air update support, and compliance with the newest cybersecurity standards.
The S32R47 radar processors are already sampling to lead customers and targeting next-generation OEM platforms. The technology is designed to meet functional safety ASIL ISO 26262 ASIL B(D) requirements, preparing the automotive industry for new levels of autonomous driving in software-defined vehicles.
