Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal met with senior leadership of Nippon Paint Holdings Co., Ltd. in Japan on August 30, 2026, on the sidelines of his four-day official visit to the country. The discussion brought together Nippon Paint's global and India leadership and covered the company's investment outlook for India, opportunities in the paints and coatings sector, and the broader trajectory of India-Japan economic ties.
The Nippon Paint delegation was led by Yuichiro Wakatsuki, Director, Representative Executive Officer and Co-President of Nippon Paint Holdings, alongside Sharad Malhotra, Managing Director of Nippon Paint India. The meeting was one of several engagements conducted during Goyal's visit as part of what has been described as India's largest-ever business delegation to Japan, aimed at deepening trade and investment links under the two countries' Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
Discussions centred on India's expanding manufacturing and infrastructure landscape and the role the paints and coatings industry could play within it. Wakatsuki indicated that the company viewed India as one of its most significant growth markets and that it intended to deepen its presence as the country's infrastructure ambitions accelerated. Malhotra said the company was focused on growing its market share across all paint segments in India, while also scaling up research and development and manufacturing capacity for both the domestic market and exports.
Nippon Paint India operates across six business segments in the country — decorative paints, automotive OEM coatings, automotive refinish and commercial vehicle coatings, wood coatings, industrial coatings, and what the company terms "beyond coatings." This spread positions the company across both consumer and industrial markets, from household wall paints to specialised coatings used in manufacturing.
The company is a subsidiary of Nippon Paint Holdings, which is headquartered in Japan and operates manufacturing facilities across 28 locations globally, with a workforce of over 31,000 employees. In Asia Pacific, its regional arm — the NIPSEA Group, headquartered in Singapore — is among the larger paint and coatings providers in the region. The India operations form part of NIPSEA's growth strategy in emerging markets.
The meeting reflects a pattern of engagement between Indian government officials and Japanese industry that has grown more structured in recent years. India and Japan have maintained a Special Strategic and Global Partnership since 2014, with manufacturing investment, technology transfer, and infrastructure development forming recurring themes in bilateral discussions. Goyal's visit to Japan, which included meetings with multiple Japanese corporations, is consistent with the Indian government's broader effort to attract long-term foreign investment into domestic manufacturing under initiatives such as Make in India.
For Nippon Paint India, the interaction signals continued intent to position itself as a significant player in a market that has seen increased competition and consolidation over the past decade. India's paints sector, historically dominated by a few domestic players, has attracted growing interest from international manufacturers as urbanisation, rising incomes, and infrastructure spending drive demand across both decorative and industrial coating categories.
