The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a nationwide institutional framework to empanel Indian Institutes of Technology and other premier technical institutions for the independent proof checking of major bridge designs. This initiative targets the hydraulic studies and structural designs of large bridge structures across all upcoming National Highway projects to verify engineering parameters before construction begins.

Under the new mechanism, the independent technical reviews will focus on structures designed for a service life of 100 years or more. The scope of the evaluation will encompass structural design calculations, engineering drawings, construction methodologies, geotechnical investigations, and hydraulic studies. Currently, around 12 IITs, including the institutes in Delhi, Bombay, Roorkee, and Kharagpur, alongside other premier technical entities, have agreed to collaborate with the highway authority for this initiative.

NHAI stated that the vetting framework will be uniformly applied across all new projects, regardless of the specific mode of construction or project delivery format being utilized. By standardizing the quality assurance process, the framework aims to minimize long term operational risks, improve structural safety, and increase design reliability across the expanding national road network.
