NHAI Plans AI and Location-Tracking Upgrade for Highway Helplines
IHMCL invites Expressions of Interest to modernise 24x7 emergency dispatch across 1.46 lakh km of national highways.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) announced that it is planning to upgrade its 1033 National Highway Helpline with artificial intelligence, real-time location tracking, and automated emergency-response dispatch systems.
Under the proposed modernization, NHAI says the platform will integrate voice AI for handling calls across multiple Indian languages, capture callers' precise locations in real time, and implement intelligent dispatch systems to direct the nearest operational support vehicles to incident spots. The system will also broadcast proactive incident alerts to highway users while retaining human operators for complex decision-making during high-priority emergencies.
1033 Helpline's Existing Reach and Daily Call Volume
Initially introduced back in 2018, the helpline which operates 24x7 covers more than 1.46 lakh kilometres of the national highway network, with NHAI stating approximately 15,000 calls handled per day. It manages incident response for medical emergencies, vehicle breakdowns, dispatch of ambulances, route patrol vehicles, and cranes, alongside resolving FASTag and toll plaza grievances.
IHMCL's Expression of Interest for the Upgrade
To execute the upgrade, NHAI-promoted Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) has invited an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the development, design, deployment, operation, and maintenance of the platform.
