Nexon becomes India’s top selling SUV in September 2025
The Tata Nexon has climbed back to the No.1 spot, emerging not only as India’s best-selling car but also as the country’s top-selling SUV for the month. The Tata Punch, meanwhile, continues to build on its stellar run, securing the fifth position in the overall sales charts.
The Nexon’s return to the top of the charts reflects its sweet spot positioning in the compact SUV market. The recent GST 2.0 revisions have further bolstered its value-for-money quotient, making it an appealing choice not just for those upgrading from smaller cars but also for buyers cross-shopping in higher segments. With a broad lineup that includes petrol, diesel, and electric variants, the Nexon offers something for every buyer profile — a factor that continues to strengthen its market pull.
The Punch, on the other hand, has emerged as the go-to SUV for customers moving up from small hatchbacks and first time buyers alike, thanks to its compact footprint and high ground clearance. Tata’s aggressive pricing, coupled with features that deliver big-car appeal in a small package, has only amplified its popularity. The Punch continues to be regarded as one of the most value-driven SUVs in the segment — and a core contributor to Tata’s growing sales volumes.
Powertrain diversity helps drive sales growth
What sets Tata motors apart from its rivals is its multi-powertrain strategy, which gives customers a wide range of choices — from conventional petrol and diesel to CNG and EVs.
In September 2025 alone, Tata Motors reported an impressive 105% year-on-year growth in CNG vehicle sales — the highest in the industry. This surge is largely attributed to the brand’s twin-cylinder technology, which maximizes boot space without compromising practicality. Together, Tata’s CNG and EV models contributed 40–45 percent of its total sales volumes for the month, reflecting a clear shift in customer preference toward cleaner, more efficient vehicles.
EV leadership and future-ready lineup
The brand recorded nearly 25,000 unit EV sales in the second quarter of FY26, putting it on track to achieve its target of 100,000 EVs in FY26. Flagship models such as the recently launched Harrier.ev and Nexon.ev remain the key volume drivers, supported by a broader EV lineup that now spans multiple price points and customer segments.
