With evolving consumer preferences for car colours, some colours remain timeless, says leading global coatings company’s Lokender Pal Singh. The Business Director, Refinish- South Asia and Value Line- ASEAN, Axalta, talks about why neutral colours dominate the scene and a personal favourite he would like to bring back.

Edited excerpts.

What is the colour trend you've observed in recent months?

Neutral tones like white, grey, and silver are dominating the scene. They're endlessly popular for a reason: they're classy, versatile, and work with any style. Plus, they provide a perfect base for customisation with accessories and accents. Black is another color gaining momentum for a touch of sophistication.

What are the top color schemes people are choosing?

Neutrals reign supreme! Grey, silver anf white are the go-to colors for their adaptability to various aesthetics. They're practical, easy to care for, and always look sharp. Each shade offers its own charm, but whites, greys, silvers, and blacks hold a unique power to elevate a car's value and appearance.

Is there a gender bias in color preference?

While white, grey, and silver reign supreme, the final decision often hinges on individual or family dynamics. If there are children involved, their input, particularly from the female members of the family, is considered. Ultimately, it's a personal choice, and every family dynamic is unique.

How do demographics influence color preferences?

Demographics play a role, but it's a complex interplay of factors. Culture, social status, and individual preferences all come into play. Generally, younger demographics tend to gravitate towards bolder colors, while older ones favour classic, subtle tones. Gender norms are fading, with individual preferences taking centre stage. In some cultures, specific colors hold unique meanings. There's no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to color choice.

Which colors are gaining the most traction this year?

Timeless black exudes luxury and elegance. Our 2024 color of the year, "Starry Night," is a popular choice – a powerful, contemporary shade with light blue and silver flakes that evokes the mysteries of space. We're pushing boundaries with Tricoat technology, two-tone options, and stunning matte finishes, all driven by innovation.

Which color would you personally bring back?

Silver in all its shades! It's a timeless color that feels modern and sophisticated. It's sleek, versatile, and complements various designs, working beautifully with other colors. Whether metallic or reflective, it always makes a statement.
