Mukand Sumi Special Steel Limited (MSSSL), a joint venture between India's Bajaj Group and Japan's Sumitomo Corporation, has announced plans for a new integrated steelmaking facility in Kanakapura, Koppal, Karnataka, with an investment of ₹2,345 crores.
The greenfield project will expand MSSSL's annual production capacity to 700,000 tonnes, positioning the company among India's leading special steel manufacturers. The new facility is expected to begin operations by early 2028, pending environmental clearances.
Since its establishment in 2018, MSSSL has maintained an annual production capacity of approximately 350,000 tonnes, primarily serving the automotive and engineering sectors with bars, wire rods, and secondary steel products.
The upcoming facility will incorporate advanced technologies including jumbo bloom casters, modern rolling mills, and comprehensive testing facilities. These capabilities will enable production of specialized steel grades for powertrains, railways, and bearings applications.
"This expansion marks a significant milestone in our long-term growth roadmap," said Vipul Mashruwala, President of MSSSL. "We are investing in sustainable and future-ready technologies that will strengthen our position in the global special steel market while aligning with national self-reliance objectives."
The plant will operate under a Zero Liquid, Solid, and Gaseous Discharge Model, with over 95% of energy requirements sourced from renewable sources. MSSSL has committed to achieving net-zero steel manufacturing by 2050, with future phases incorporating hydrogen-ready infrastructure and carbon capture technologies.
The 0.35 million tonnes per annum integrated facility will include iron making, steel making, and blooming mill operations. The project emphasizes flexibility, automation, and digital integration to optimize product quality and energy consumption.
MSSSL's expansion responds to growing demand for high-quality special steel across industrial, energy, and automotive sectors, driven by India's infrastructure development and manufacturing growth initiatives.
The company currently serves both domestic and international manufacturers, with plans to strengthen its position as a key supplier for global original equipment manufacturers in automotive, railways, oil and gas, energy, and bearing steel applications.
