Automotive lubricant maker Motul India has partnered with D2C EV brand Zypp Electric to launch a nationwide training program for mechanics focusing on electric two-wheeler (e-2W) repair and maintenance. The initiative, which began with a two-day pilot training session in Gurugram, aims to certify over 10,000 mechanics across India as EV repair specialists.
This strategic collaboration combines Motul India’s expertise in automotive maintenance with Zypp Electric’s operational insights into electric two-wheelers. Together, the companies seek to empower mechanics by enhancing their skills, enabling them to service both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles.
The inaugural program featured a blend of theoretical and hands-on training. Mechanics were educated on EV electrical systems, diagnostics, troubleshooting, and practical skills essential for maintaining and repairing electric two-wheelers. Feedback from participants and dealer partners highlighted the program’s relevance, with mechanics reporting up to a 50% improvement in their EV repair knowledge.
Nagendra Pai, CEO of Motul India & South Asia, said the initiative is part of Motul's broader ambitions in the mobility industry, including EV, retrofitting to EV and hydrogen, thermal management, and immersed battery technology. “Beyond upskilling, we are empowering mechanics to create new avenues of growth and earnings,” he said.
Akash Gupta, Co-Founder and CEO of Zypp Electric, said India is a fast-growing market, and its booming e-commerce requires massive logistics expertise and prowess. Currently, the EV ecosystem needs many grassroots interventions, and training the workforce is one of them. “Partnering with Motul India in this training initiative for mechanics perfectly aligns with our mission to build a sustainable EV last-mile delivery ecosystem,” he stated.
Motul India and Zypp Electric’s partnership represents a milestone in bridging the skills gap in India’s evolving automotive landscape. By training mechanics in both ICE and EV technologies, the initiative ensures they remain competitive and adaptable in the fast-changing vehicle ecosystem.
