MG secures trademark for Excelor EV nameplate in India

MG Motor India has trademarked the ‘Excelor EV’ nameplate in India, which could possibly be the carmaker’s third EV in our country. The trademark was applied for in December 2023 and has been “accepted and advertised”. MG currently has the Comet EV and ZS EV on sale in our market.

MG Excelor EV: what could it be?

There are currently no details on the size, specifications or even the body style of the Excelor EV. In fact, MG doesn’t even have a model called the Excelor EV in any of its markets overseas. It is important to note that a trademark does not guarantee the launch of a particular model, but is only to secure the rights to use that particular name.

MG has confirmed two new launches for 2024, and we know that one of them is the 2024 MG Gloster that’s due a mid-lifecycle update with minor cosmetic and equipment upgrades. The other, which will be an electric vehicle, could be what the company has trademarked as the Excelor EV.

MG had previously showcased an array of models from its global line-up to gauge customer interest at the 2023 Auto Expo. This included the eMG6 hybrid sedan, MG eHS SUV, MG eRX5 SUV and the Marvel R. It is possible that one of these models could be rebranded for India.

MG Motor India, which recently entered into a partnership with JSW where the latter acquired a 35 percent stake in the Indian arm of the company, is set to make new announcements about its future plans on March 20. Currently, there's only speculation about what the Excelor EV could be, but we should have more details soon.
