Taiwanese semiconductor firm bets big on India's connected vehicle ecosystem, ramps up local engineering efforts and EV tech collaborations.

Taiwanese semiconductor giant MediaTek is sharpening its focus on the automotive sector in India, projecting that the country will contribute 20% of its global automotive deployments over the next five years, according to senior company officials.
“From an automotive standpoint, India is expected to account for 20% of the total number of deployments in the segment in the next five years,” said Rita Wu, Director of Product Marketing, Automotive Platform, at MediaTek. “We foresee that the India market will be very important in the automotive field. That's why we have engaged engineers here to understand customers’ requirements.”
Wu noted that while global vehicle markets often follow common trends, India's needs are distinct, necessitating scalable hardware and software platforms tailored for this market.
According to market research firm Counterpoint, India is currently the fastest-growing connected car market, with a CAGR of 18% projected between 2025 and 2030. “Government policies, growing presence of global OEMs, seeking alternative sourcing hubs, and the rising importance of software in vehicles have together created a strategic opportunity for Indian players to enhance capabilities, accelerate growth, and establish India as a global automotive hub,” said Steven Lee, Deputy Director, Intelligent Software Development at MediaTek.
He added that the sector is now positioned for transformational growth, propelled by 5G-enabled M2M (machine-to-machine) connectivity, AI integration, and high-end multimedia systems: technologies that are quickly outpacing traditional 4G-based frameworks.
“At MediaTek, our Dimensity Automotive portfolio brings together advanced AI, high energy efficiency, robust security, and industry-leading connectivity,” Lee said. “We are working closely with OEMs to deliver immersive, advanced in-vehicle user experiences to reach AI defined Cockpit with cybersecurity capabilities and enhanced connectivity.”
MediaTek currently employs 1,000 engineers in India. Of these, 50 engineers are dedicated to automotive product development, with plans to double that headcount in the coming months. The company operates global research and design centers in Bengaluru and Noida, along with an office in Mumbai. The local R&D focus underscores MediaTek’s commitment to developing solutions tailored for Indian automotive conditions, especially in four-wheeler EVs.
In India, MediaTek has Tata Motors, JSW MG Motor India, and Skoda among its automotive clients. Globally, the company supplies chipsets to Volkswagen, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, BMW, and Audi, among others.
As a fabless semiconductor company, MediaTek designs its chips but outsources manufacturing primarily to TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company). While the company is open to outsource manufacturing to Indian fab companies as the semiconductor ecosystem matures, its advanced chip production currently remains with established foundry partners abroad.
While MediaTek's core business in India continues to be providing chips for smartphones, followed by smart TVs, IoT devices, energy meters, and Wi-Fi routers, it considers automotive and IoT verticals to be the next growth drivers.
