IIM-Ahmedabad-backed Matter Energy has announced that it will launch swappable batteries in electric motorcycles that will also have a residential and stationery usage. The motorcycle batteries can additionally be used as dual-purpose smart home dock inverters with IoT capabilities that can even be charged remotely.

To add to its technology stack, the electric motorcycle maker's energy division has announced a strategic partnership with Schneider Electric-backed Luminous to jointly develop such batteries. These can be scaled up with solar applications that can act as a backup for electric charging stations.

Currently, Tier Two and Tier Three markets face power outages which limit the ability to provide charging on the go for all classes of electric vehicles.

Matter Energy along with Luminous will shortly work with EV charging vendors and even bid for such projects to create disruptive solutions keeping the customer at the centre. We want to ensure that the application benefits his daily lifestyle and reduces his overall energy cost, said Mohal Lalabhai, Founder & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Matter Energy.

“The dock can be used for both mobility and domestic energy storage applications. This lithium-ion battery solution is built on the principles of battery swapping technology to power a two-wheeler and home inverter interchangeably,” Lalabhai further explained.

Luminous Power Technologies CEO, Preeti Bajaj said that the partnership will look to co-develop products both for EVs and residential usage thereby enlarging the market for inverter batteries and solar-based charging applications that they will jointly develop and market. “Our first jointly developed product will be ready in the next six months and once we test the market effectiveness, we will further scale up this partnership to look at avenues of jointly investing and building the Luminous-Matter Energy franchise,” Bajaj said.

Bajaj further added that Matters' expertise in Lithium-ion battery technology will empower the firm to provide advanced solutions to customers in Indian and international geographies.

Matter, which showcased India's first geared electric motorcycle, is also participating at the AutoExpo 2023 where it is expected to reveal the name and pricing of its latest offerings.
