Matel Motion & Energy Solutions Partners with Honda for EV Battery-Swapping Technology

Matel Motion & Energy Solutions has announced a strategic partnership with Honda Power Pack Energy India (HEID) that aims to advance swappable battery technology for electric vehicles in India.

The collaboration will integrate Matel's electric powertrain systems with Honda's swappable battery technology, creating a solution that addresses two persistent challenges in EV adoption: limited range and lengthy charging times.

Industry analysts note that these issues particularly impact commercial EV operators, where vehicle downtime directly affects revenue. The swappable battery approach allows drivers to exchange depleted batteries for fully charged units at designated stations in minutes rather than waiting for recharging.

"We are pleased to announce the collaboration with Matel Motion to accelerate the penetration of EVs in India," said Tomohide Haraguchi, Vice President of Honda Power Pack Energy India. "Our service is particularly beneficial for B2B customers with high daily usage. Increasing battery capacity or adopting quick-charging solutions often leads to higher vehicle costs and battery replacement expenses over time. Our solution mitigates these challenges, ensuring long-term safety and reliability."

Honda brings substantial expertise in lithium-ion battery development from its automotive experience. HEID currently operates battery-swapping infrastructure in Bangalore and plans expansion to Delhi and Mumbai.

Under the agreement, Matel will adapt its powertrain solutions to work seamlessly with Honda's swappable battery ecosystem. For manufacturers already using Matel's systems with fixed batteries, transitioning to swappable variants will require only interface modifications while retaining the same underlying technology.

Netaji Patro, Co-founder and Director of Business Development & Partnerships at Matel, described the partnership as a significant step forward for India's EV market. "We are delighted to collaborate with HEID, a company with deep expertise in battery technology. This initiative will play a crucial role in driving EV adoption across India by providing a practical and cost-effective solution for vehicle manufacturers and users alike."

Matel, an Indian technology company, specializes in advanced electric powertrain solutions including motors, controllers, and geartrains. The company develops products for various vehicle categories from two-wheelers to buses, as well as industrial applications. With its focus on energy efficiency and indigenous R&D capabilities, Matel contributes to India's domestic manufacturing goals.
