Maruti Suzuki pledges Rs 450 crore towards renewable energy initiatives
Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has announced a substantial investment of approximately INR 450 crores over the next three years, starting from FY 2024-25, to bolster its environmental sustainability initiatives.
Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) has announced a substantial investment of approximately INR 450 crores over the next three years, starting from FY 2024-25, to bolster its environmental sustainability initiatives. This significant financial commitment comes on the heels of the company's INR 120.8 crore investment in renewable energy projects, including solar power and biogas, in FY2023-24.
As part of this multi-crore investment, MSIL has recently launched a pilot Biogas plant at its Manesar facility for the fiscal year 2024-25. The project, which aligns with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy's 'Waste to Energy' program, utilizes in-house food waste and Napier grass as resources for biogas production. The pilot plant is expected to generate 0.2 tons of biogas daily, with an anticipated output of around 1 lac standard cubic meters of biogas in FY 2024-25, offsetting approximately 190 tonnes of CO2 per annum.
Mr. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, emphasized the company's commitment to sustainable practices, stating, "As we ramp up our production capacity from around 2 million to 4 million by 2030-31, we are also accelerating our efforts to increase the share of sustainable and renewable energy sources across our operations. The INR 450 crore investment over the next three years underscores our dedication to fostering a cleaner and more sustainable energy landscape at MSIL and the industry at large."
The substantial financial allocation towards renewable energy initiatives demonstrates MSIL's proactive approach to addressing environmental concerns and reducing its carbon footprint. The company strategically invests in its existing and upcoming facilities to ensure environmental sustainability by optimizing energy consumption, integrating renewable energy sources, implementing efficient waste management protocols, and conserving water resources.
The learnings from the pilot biogas project at the Manesar facility will be implemented at MSIL's upcoming world-class manufacturing facilities, further extending the impact of the INR 450 crore investment. This significant financial commitment positions Maruti Suzuki India Limited as a leader in the automotive industry's transition towards a greener and more sustainable future.
