Low inventory, high demand power Maruti Suzuki’s record December sales

Maruti Suzuki India, the country’s largest car maker, said it recorded its highest-ever monthly retail sales in December 2025, selling 286,000 vehicles, even as dealer inventories dropped to just three days’ supply, signalling sustained demand heading into the new year.
The country’s largest carmaker ended the month with pending bookings of 175,000 units, according to data shared by Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer, marketing and sales at Maruti Suzuki.
Total wholesales for the month stood at 217,854 units, up 22% from a year earlier. Domestic sales were 182,165 units, while exports were 25,739 units. Sales to other OEMs were about 9,950 units.
“We have done a retail of close to 2.86 lakhs and this has been the highest ever retail… we are now having a network stock of three days’ and our pending bookings… are close to 1.75 lakhs,” Banerjee said.
The company said one of its plants was shut from December 27, limiting dispatches.
For the October–December quarter, Maruti Suzuki posted its highest-ever quarterly sales of 537,433 units, up 22.2% year-on-year. Retail sales for the quarter stood at 683,000 units, also a record.
October had seen a pickup in demand on the back of the festive season and improved affordability following tax-related price changes, with retail sales of 242,000 units, Banerjee said.
For the full calendar year 2025, Maruti Suzuki reported retail sales of 1.871 million units, its highest ever, surpassing the previous peak of 1.844 million units.
The company said demand was driven by its core models, with Baleno emerging as the top-selling model in December at 22,108 units, while the Dzire became the country’s best-selling car in 2025 with sales of nearly 214,000 units. The Fronx also added incremental volumes.
“Despite so much clutter in the SUV segment, the Dzire… is the outlier, standing ahead of so many SUVs in the market… it only proves one point that if you can make a good product, there are customers in the market who are going to buy it,” Banerjee said.
CNG vehicles continued to gain traction, with cumulative sales crossing 700,000 units. CNG models now account for 37% of the company’s total sales, Banerjee said.
Maruti Suzuki said it remains focused on reducing waiting periods as it works through the current order backlog.
