Maruti Suzuki Leads Clean Energy Vehicle Market with 54% Share; New Brezza Expected to Strengthen Lead: Partho Banerjee

India's largest passenger vehicle maker Maruti Suzuki now commands a 54% market share in the clean energy vehicle segment—including CNG, hybrid and electric vehicles—and expects its refreshed Brezza to further strengthen its position as it expands its portfolio of cleaner powertrains. "We are the market leader in the clean and the green vehicles across the country. We are having a market share of 54%,"Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing & Sales, Maruti Suzuki India said.

The updated Brezza, he adds, has been developed around three distinct customer needs—better low-end torque for city driving, higher power for highway performance and an underbody CNG option for customers looking for cleaner mobility without compromising on performance.

Banerjee said customer research showed buyers were less concerned about technical specifications such as horsepower and torque figures and more interested in real-world driving performance. The addition of an underbody CNG variant is expected to reinforce Maruti's dominance in clean energy vehicles, a segment where the automaker already has a commanding lead thanks to its wide CNG portfolio.

Maruti also expects the compact SUV segment to remain a key growth driver. Banerjee said SUVs now account for 57-58% of India's passenger vehicle market, while compact SUVs make up about 30% of the SUV segment.

"While we are optimistic about improving Brezza volumes as production constraints ease. Our new Kharkhoda facility has started contributing production, although supply remains tight across multiple models," he said.

Brezza sales had remained broadly stable at around 15,000 units a month, but production shortages had limited the company's ability to fully meet demand, according to Banerjee.

With additional manufacturing capacity and the introduction of turbo-petrol and underbody CNG variants, Maruti expects the new Brezza to help consolidate its leadership not only in compact SUVs but also in the fast-growing clean energy vehicle market.
