Maruti Suzuki Dzire Tops FY26 Sales Chart; Can it Revive the Sedan Segment?
Maruti Suzuki Dzire emerged as India’s best-selling car in FY26 with sales of 2.3 lakh units, despite SUVs dominating the market.
Maruti Suzuki has staged a turnaround in the sedan segment, with its Maruti Suzuki Dzire emerging as the industry’s top-selling model, clocking 2.3 lakh units in FY26. This resurgence comes at a time when SUVs dominate the Indian automotive landscape with a 66% market share.
“Our sedan segment share was 45.8% in FY17; today, it stands at 57.2%. At a time when SUVs are ruling the roost, with models being launched one after another and gaining volumes, a sedan emerging as the number one model is a significant achievement. It shows there are still customers who prefer sedans,” said Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer – Marketing & Sales, Maruti Suzuki.
He added that, as the market leader, the company will maintain a presence across all body styles while following a technologically agnostic approach. “To reinforce that point, in the last financial year, a sedan became the number one car in the industry—the Dzire. Even when others were moving away from the segment, we anticipated this shift while launching the new Dzire last year and ensured it would emerge as a strong contender,” he said.
Banerjee emphasized that the Dzire’s success reflects Maruti’s multi-segment strategy. “There is currently no other sedan in our portfolio. Many Maruti Suzuki Ciaz customers are upgrading to SUVs or MPVs, while some are also considering the Dzire. We have not exited the sedan segment,” he noted.
He added that the full model change of the Dzire in FY24–25 reinforced the idea that a well-designed product will always find acceptance. “While the SUV segment continues to grow, there are still many customers who prefer sedans. Different use cases demand different vehicles—SUVs are suited for certain road conditions, but there remains a strong case for sedans,” he said.
On the industry outlook, Banerjee said growth is expected to be around 5%. For FY26, the company recorded its highest-ever total sales of 2,422,713 units, including domestic sales of 1,861,704 units and exports of 447,774 units.
