Maruti Suzuki Brezza Marks Ten Years as India's Top-Selling Compact SUV
The Brezza, launched in 2016, has held a place among India's ten best-selling passenger vehicles every year since its debut, as compact SUVs now account for nearly a third of the total passenger vehicle market.
Maruti Suzuki India Limited on Monday marked the tenth anniversary of the Brezza, the compact SUV the company credits with helping shape the growth of that vehicle segment in India. Since its launch in 2016, the Brezza has remained among the ten best-selling passenger vehicles in the country each year — a consistency that few models in the Indian market have matched over the same period.
The anniversary comes at a time when the compact SUV segment, largely nascent when the Brezza was introduced, now accounts for 31% of total passenger vehicle sales in India, according to figures cited by Maruti Suzuki. A decade ago, that figure was considerably lower, and the segment was not yet among the dominant categories in the market. The company attributes a portion of that structural shift to the Brezza's sustained presence and its role in establishing buyer familiarity with the format.
Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer for Marketing and Sales at Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said the vehicle had "steadily expanded the market share for the entire compact SUV segment" over the decade. "The Brezza story is one that has empowered the SUV era in India," Banerjee said in a statement, adding that the model had "constantly redefined customer expectations with each new model launch." He said the company remains committed to offering customers "the perfect blend of style, technology, performance, and appeal."
One measure of the model's market standing, according to the company, is that 56% of customers in the compact SUV category identify the Brezza as their first-choice vehicle before beginning the formal purchase process — a metric the industry refers to as "predetermined consideration." That figure suggests a degree of brand loyalty that extends beyond individual model cycles.
The Brezza received more than 28 automotive industry awards in its first year on sale, including the Indian Car of the Year (ICOTY) award for 2017, which is among the more widely cited recognitions in the domestic industry. The model has since been updated across two generations, with each iteration bringing changes to both the exterior design and on-board technology.
The current version is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with Maruti Suzuki's Progressive Smart Hybrid Technology, which uses a belt-integrated starter generator to assist the engine during acceleration and recover energy during braking. The transmission options include a six-speed automatic with steering-mounted paddle shifters. Technology features include a 360-degree camera system, a head-up display, an electric sunroof, and a Smart Play Pro+ infotainment system with surround sound. On the safety side, six airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Hill Hold Assist come fitted as standard across variants — a specification that aligns with the government's push in recent years for broader safety equipment mandates.
The growth of the compact SUV segment over the past decade reflects a wider shift in Indian consumer preferences. Buyers have moved away from sedans and entry-level hatchbacks toward taller vehicles that offer greater road presence and more cabin space, even at similar price points. This has prompted most major manufacturers operating in India — domestic and international — to expand their compact SUV offerings, making it one of the more competitive categories in the passenger vehicle market today.
Maruti Suzuki, which holds the largest share of the overall Indian passenger vehicle market, has used the Brezza as its primary entry point into the SUV segment. The model is sold through the company's Arena dealership network and is manufactured at Maruti Suzuki's facility in Gujarat.
