Mahindra Targets Tata Intra, Dost With ₹8.25 Lakh Veero 1.1 CNG

Mahindra & Mahindra is expanding its small commercial vehicle presence with the Veero 1.1 XXL CNG, entering a lower payload category as it looks to build on recent market-share gains.

Priced at ₹8.25 lakh for the V2 variant and ₹8.55 lakh for the V4, the new Veero has a rated payload of 1.1 tonnes and a 2,900mm, or 9.5-foot, cargo deck. Customer deliveries are scheduled to begin on September 20.

The model is aimed at intra-city applications such as FMCG and pharmaceutical distribution, e-commerce deliveries, parcel movement and the transportation of fruits and vegetables.

“The 1.1 CNG is a new entry for us in that space,” Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra, told Autocar Professional.

The model is based on Mahindra’s Urban Prosper Platform, or UPP, introduced with the first Veero in September 2024. The modular architecture can accommodate different payloads, cargo decks and powertrains.

Filling A Portfolio Gap

Mahindra has traditionally been strong in larger pickups, particularly vehicles used to transport agricultural produce. Compact, fully forward-control vehicles, however, had remained a relatively weaker part of its portfolio.

The Veero was developed to address this gap and expand the company’s reach into urban logistics and volume-led cargo applications.

“We saw fragmentation of the market and several sub-segments emerging,” Gollagunta said. “Volumetric cargo started growing, including pharmaceuticals and FMCG. Quick commerce and intra-city logistics were also becoming important.”

Mahindra has sold about 42,000 Veeros since the model was introduced. The platform has also helped improve its position in southern India, where the company previously had limited representation.

Its share of the small pickup market stood at about 49% at the end of the previous financial year, an increase of six to seven percentage points, according to Gollagunta.

He estimated the sub-two-tonne small pickup market at approximately 15,000 vehicles a month, translating into an annual opportunity of around 1.8 lakh units.

Tata Intra And Dost Are The Direct Rivals

While the new model broadens Mahindra’s challenge to Tata Motors’ Ace-Intra franchise, its closest like-for-like competitors are the Tata Intra V20 Gold Bi-Fuel and Ashok Leyland Dost Twin Fuel.

The Tata Intra V20 Gold offers a 1,200kg payload and a 2,690mm cargo body. It can carry 100kg more than the Veero, but its deck is 210mm shorter. Tata claims a combined driving range of more than 800km for the model.

Mahindra’s proposition rests on the longer deck, which is suited to light but bulky consignments where cargo volume matters more than maximum payload.

Ashok Leyland presents the sharper challenge on price. The Dost Twin Fuel starts at ₹8.20 lakh, ₹5,000 below the entry Veero, and offers a payload of 1,218kg and a claimed range of 400km.

The larger Dost+ XL Twin Fuel costs ₹8.75 lakh and carries 1,410kg. It is ₹20,000 more expensive than the Veero V4 but offers substantially greater payload capacity and a claimed range of 500km.

The Tata Ace CNG and Maruti Suzuki Super Carry CNG are indirect competitors because they operate at lower payload and price points. The Tata Ace CNG 2.0 carries 800kg, while the Super Carry CNG has a 630kg payload and is priced between ₹6.06 lakh and ₹6.14 lakh.

The Veero is therefore positioned as an upgrade for operators who have outgrown conventional mini-trucks but do not require the higher payload offered by larger pickups.

Longer Deck For Urban Cargo

The Veero 1.1 XXL CNG is powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine producing 48.5kW, or about 66hp, and 98Nm of torque.

Mahindra claims an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 21.4km per kg and a combined petrol and CNG range of more than 450km. Its turning radius of 5.1 metres is intended to make it easier to operate in congested streets and restricted loading areas.

The combination of a 1.1-tonne payload and a 9.5-foot deck allows Mahindra to target customers carrying cartons, packages and pallets that occupy considerable space without necessarily reaching the vehicle’s maximum weight capacity.

Top Variant Exceeds Mahindra’s Expectations

When the Veero was launched, Mahindra expected its top variant to account for 20-25% of sales. It now contributes more than 40% of the model’s volume, reflecting growing demand for safety, comfort and connectivity features among commercial vehicle buyers.

“We are realising that drivers are insisting on some of these things,” Gollagunta said. “AC is another one. We thought AC would not have much acceptance, but now it is becoming something everybody wants in the vehicle.”

The Veero offers features including a driver airbag, reversing camera, touchscreen, power windows and air conditioning. However, Gollagunta said total cost of ownership remained the deciding factor.

“If the math doesn’t work, they are not going to buy the vehicle,” he said. “It is a very cost-sensitive segment, and word of mouth is more important than anything else.”

Diesel Range Upgraded

Mahindra has also upgraded the Veero diesel range, priced from ₹8.29 lakh to ₹9.45 lakh.

The revised model gets a 26.03cm touchscreen with Android Auto, voice commands in multiple languages, cruise control and remote AC operation through the iMAXX connected-vehicle platform.

The iMAXX suite offers more than 50 functions, including vehicle tracking, geofencing, route planning, fuel monitoring and vehicle-health information. Power windows and fast-charging ports will be standard across the range.

Mahindra has also introduced an LNT emission-treatment option alongside the existing SCR system, responding to demand from customers seeking an alternative that does not require diesel exhaust fluid.

The upgraded diesel range will be available from September 8.

Capacity Available To Support Growth

Mahindra has operationalised monthly capacity of about 3,000-3,500 units for the Veero platform and can increase it to 5,000 units.

Gollagunta did not disclose a sales target for the new model, saying the company would monitor customer acceptance and operating economics before scaling up production.

“Our expectation is to make sure customers are happy, use the vehicle well and that their total cost of ownership works,” he said. “We are confident this will find adoption in the right applications. That will result in market share, but we are not chasing market share per se.”

Mahindra has about 52% of the commercial vehicle market below 3.5 tonnes, according to Gollagunta, supported by its position in larger pickups. Its share of the larger pickup market is around 63-64%.

Electric Veero Remains On The Roadmap

The Urban Prosper Platform can accommodate an electric powertrain, but Mahindra is waiting for the economics to work for a sufficiently large number of operators.

Gollagunta said diesel and CNG currently meet the total cost of ownership requirements of most customers. The company has the technology to offer an electric derivative but will introduce it only when it is confident about demand and scale.

“We believe EV will play a part, and we don’t think that point is very far away,” he said. “We have the optionality, which is precisely why the platform can do it. At the right time, we will bring it in.”

The new model strengthens Mahindra’s coverage of the sub-two-tonne market as it seeks to replicate its larger-pickup leadership across a wider range of commercial vehicle applications.
