Mahindra Last Mile Mobility Limited (MLMML) has been selected as a finalist for the Earthshot Prize 2026, placing it among 15 organisations shortlisted globally from a field of environmental initiatives. The company is the only automotive manufacturer and the only corporate entity in this year's cohort, alongside governments, non-profits, and conservation bodies from across the world.

MLMML has been nominated under the "Clean Our Air" category for its role in expanding electric last-mile transportation across India. The company's fleet of electric three-wheelers and small commercial vehicles has collectively covered more than 9 billion kilometres. MLMML estimates this has helped avoid approximately 185,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions — equivalent to removing a significant number of petrol-powered vehicles from urban roads over multiple years. The company has sold more than 400,000 electric vehicles to date, making it India's largest electric small commercial vehicle manufacturer by volume.

The Earthshot Prize was founded in 2020 by Prince William. It selects 15 finalists annually across five environmental categories — Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-free World, and Fix Our Climate — with three finalists per category. One winner in each category receives £1 million at the annual awards ceremony to help scale their solution further. All 15 finalists also participate in a year-long Earthshot Fellowship programme, gaining access to a network of advisers, investors, and peer organisations working on environmental challenges.

Beyond emissions reduction, MLMML has positioned its work as having a parallel economic dimension. Electric three-wheelers and small cargo vehicles serve as income-generating assets for drivers, delivery partners, shopkeepers, and small businesses across India. The company argues that lower operating costs relative to petrol and diesel vehicles improve the earning potential of owner-drivers, contributing to household incomes and enabling micro-entrepreneurship at scale. India's electric three-wheeler segment has drawn attention in international media, with reporting from cities including Lucknow documenting how the shift to electric operation has altered the daily economics for drivers.

The company also runs a programme called UDAY NXT, which extends its focus beyond the vehicle itself. The initiative provides owner-drivers with benefits including accidental insurance and access to financial counselling, intended to improve the financial resilience of drivers and their families.

MLMML's product portfolio includes the Treo range, UDO, Zor Grand, e-Alfa, and ZEO, covering both passenger and cargo applications. The company is a subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., a conglomerate with operations across farm equipment, utility vehicles, financial services, and renewable energy.

Other finalists in the 2026 cohort include Ørsted, Mahila Housing Trust, AirQo, Satellites on Fire, Pula, the City of Barcelona, Bhutan, Indigenous Desert Alliance, Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative, Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance, Niue Ocean Wide Trust, PFAS-Free France, South Korea Zero Waste Movement Network, and Mother Earth Foundation.
