Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. marked its 80th Founders’ Day today. The company traces its origin to October 2, 1945, when J.C. Mahindra and K.C. Mahindra set it up on the day of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary.
In 1945, before India’s independence, the company placed an advertisement in The Times of India announcing its formation. The notice invited people from all communities to join a company built on principles of fairness, opportunity and enterprise, at a time marked by global conflict and economic uncertainty.
Chairman Anand Mahindra said the group was created with the intent to support nation-building by developing industry, creating jobs and enabling communities during the transition from colonial rule. He said the group aims to renew those commitments in the current environment and contribute to India’s technological goals.
Group CEO and Managing Director Dr. Anish Shah said the founders focused on principles rather than products or financial targets. He noted that values such as entrepreneurship, integrity and diversity continue to guide the group’s operations.
Mahindra began by assembling Willys jeeps in post-war India. It has since expanded into sectors including mobility, technology, finance, hospitality and renewable energy. The group operates in more than 100 countries and runs projects related to sustainability, gender inclusion, skilling and rural development.
The 1945 advertisement reflected the company’s stance on open opportunity and inclusion. As the group marks 80 years, leadership says it aims to maintain that approach while keeping focus on performance during global volatility. The group says about 70 percent of India’s GDP involves sectors in which it operates.
Entering its ninth decade, Mahindra plans to continue what it calls purpose-driven growth. It describes itself as a platform that connects people, partners and businesses within its network. The group cites employees as central to its operations and says growth is measured by impact as well as earnings.
The group highlighted initiatives such as Kaabil, which offers skills training for women, and Nanhi Kali, which supports the education of underprivileged girls. The company also referenced sustainability and community programmes.
Mahindra views the current global economic and geopolitical context as challenging but believes India could strengthen its manufacturing position due to infrastructure, workforce and policy conditions. The group is working toward stronger international brand recognition.
