The Government of Maharashtra has announced a partial modification to its earlier toll policy on the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu and its approach roads, granting toll exemptions to certain categories of electric vehicles effective August 21, 2025.
The decision, issued by the Urban Development Department under Government Notification No. MRD-3325/C.R.123/UD-7, extends the existing toll exemption to electric four-wheelers (category M1), including both transport and non-transport vehicles, as well as electric buses (categories M3 and M4), whether operated by State Transport Undertakings (STU) or non-STU entities.
This exemption applies specifically to toll collection centers at Shivaji Nagar and Gavan along the Atal Setu corridor. The move builds upon a previous government resolution dated January 31, 2025 (No. MRD-3323/C.R.131/UD-7), which had introduced toll charges for various vehicle categories on the bridge for the period from February 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025.
The current modification is made under the provisions of sub-section (1-E) of Section 20 of the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Tax Act, 1958. It follows an earlier decision by the Home Department (Government Resolution No. MVR-0125/C.R.13/Tra-2, dated May 23, 2025), which had already exempted the same categories of electric vehicles from toll charges in the public interest.
The updated notification reaffirms the state government’s focus on promoting eco-friendly transportation by incentivizing the use of electric vehicles through reduced travel costs on major infrastructure projects like the Atal Setu.
The toll exemption will remain in effect until December 31, 2025, aligning with the original toll levy period for other vehicle classes.
