LANXESS Secures 200,000 MWh Green Electricity Supply from VERBUND Through 2028

Specialty chemicals company LANXESS has signed a three-year contract with VERBUND for the supply of green electricity to its German production facilities. The agreement covers the period from 2026 to 2028 and will provide approximately 200,000 MWh of renewable energy.

VERBUND, Austria's leading energy company and one of Europe's largest hydroelectric power producers, will supply electricity generated from existing hydroelectric power plants on the Inn River in Bavaria, Germany. The power will be distributed to LANXESS sites in Bergkamen, Bitterfeld, Brunsbüttel, Mannheim and Wietmarschen.

The transition to hydropower is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 60,000 tons compared to the standard German electricity mix. The initiative represents a step toward LANXESS' target of achieving climate-neutral production by 2040.

Alexander Sonnenberg, Head of Energy Procurement at LANXESS, stated that the company's production facilities operate continuously and require consistent electricity supply. He noted that VERBUND's hydropower plants can provide this reliability while supporting the company's climate neutrality objectives.

Andreas Lanz, Center Manager Industrial Customers at VERBUND Energy4Business, indicated that demand for sustainable electricity continues to grow. He referenced the VERBUND Climate Transition Plan, which aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and emphasized the company's role in helping industrial clients reduce their carbon footprints.

VERBUND operates 22 run-of-river power plants in Bavaria and along the Bavarian-Austrian border. The facilities have a combined installed capacity of 1,040 MW and generate 5.9 TWh annually, with 4.0 TWh allocated to Bavaria.

The company has invested approximately 600 million euros in Bavarian energy production projects that have been completed or are currently underway. Additional projects worth approximately 1 billion euros are in planning or approval stages. VERBUND has allocated around 100 million euros for ecological measures in Bavaria through 2030, including fish passage systems, habitat preservation, and water quality improvements. Approximately 30 million euros of this amount has been implemented.

VERBUND plans to invest 5.9 billion euros by 2027 in sustainable energy development. The company has committed 400 million euros to ecological projects by 2030, with roughly 200 million euros already executed.

LANXESS aims to achieve climate neutrality across its entire value chain by 2050, including upstream and downstream operations. The Science Based Targets initiative has confirmed that these objectives align with the 1.5-degree Celsius reduction path outlined in the Paris Climate Agreement. The CDP climate protection initiative has included LANXESS in its Climate A List for seven consecutive years.

LANXESS reported sales of 6.4 billion euros in 2024 and currently employs approximately 11,800 people across 32 countries. The company focuses on developing, manufacturing and marketing chemical intermediates, additives and consumer protection products.
