Kia Confirms Seltos Hybrid for India; Rollout Tied to Aggressive Localisation Push

Kia India has formally confirmed that a hybrid version of the new Seltos is part of its future powertrain roadmap. Still, the model will only enter the market once the company achieves meaningful localisation of hybrid components, ensuring the technology is priced competitively for Indian buyers.

"There is a clear direction that we will introduce a hybrid in the Seltos. Timing is not decided yet because we are trying to localise the hybrid components in India," said Atul Sood, Senior Vice President – Sales & Marketing, Kia India. Autocar Professional learns that the hybrid version should make its way into the market within the next 12-18 months.

Localisation: The Non-Negotiable Step

Unlike markets such as the US and Korea—where the Seltos Hybrid is already on sale—India demands aggressive localisation to reduce the cost of hybrid systems, including motors, battery packs, control units, and inverters. Without localisation, Kia risks pricing itself out of contention in a segment where customers remain deeply value-conscious.

Sood also hinted that another Kia model may debut hybrid technology in India before the Seltos, indicating internal sequencing within the Hyundai Motor Group and prioritisation linked to CAFE compliance. This positions Kia to follow a multi-powertrain architecture: hybrids, EVs, and CNG—all of which will be essential as India enforces tougher efficiency norms.

Competitive Pressures Intensifying

While Kia develops its hybrid play, rivals including Toyota, Maruti Suzuki and Honda are also getting aggressive with their hybrid portfolios, in order to strengthen their competitive position in the mid-size SUV segment. To remain competitive in a class that now heavily rewards efficiency and running-cost benefits, Kia must ensure the Seltos hybrid arrives with the right pricing window.

The Seltos Hybrid is a matter of 'when', not 'if'. But its timing will depend entirely on how quickly Kia can localise hybrid components in India and unlock scale benefits.
