Jupiter Electric Mobility Launches Containerised Battery Energy Storage Systems

Jupiter Electric Mobility (JEM), a subsidiary of Jupiter Wagons Limited, has announced the launch of its new 10-foot and 20-foot containerised Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), marking the company's expansion into the clean energy storage sector.

The modular, air-cooled systems offer storage capacities ranging from 241 kWh to 3 MWh and are designed for applications including diesel generator replacement, solar storage, energy shifting, and backup power solutions for commercial and industrial clients.

First Commercial Deployment

The inaugural 10-foot BESS unit has been supplied through a partnership with GMMCO, a CK Birla Group company, to Greenlit, a Mumbai-based subsidiary of Recube that serves the events, entertainment, and hospitality sectors. JEM plans to continue collaborating with GMMCO to deploy similar sustainable solutions across India.

JEM has developed the systems with a vertically integrated approach, designing and manufacturing all components in-house, from container fabrication to battery production and system integration. The systems are built at JEM's facilities in Indore and Bangalore, representing what the company describes as one of the few fully integrated approaches in India's energy storage segment.

Expansion Plans

The company announced plans to scale its Indore plant capacity from 1 GWh annually to 5 GWh over the next three years to meet growing commercial and industrial market demand. JEM also revealed it will export its first 20-foot BESS unit to Africa in October and plans to launch liquid-cooled BESS systems for grid-scale applications.

Technical Specifications

The 10-foot BESS units feature:

  • Battery capacity: 241 kWh to 964 kWh
  • AC power output: 200 kW
  • Voltage: 440 VAC
  • Air-cooled system with 10-year operational life
  • Applications include DG replacement, mobile energy storage, solar storage, and energy shifting

Industry Response

Vivek Lohia, Managing Director of Jupiter Group, stated that the launch represents an important milestone for the company's battery division, emphasizing the systems' compliance with IEC standards and ongoing certification processes.

Pankaj Kumar Jha, Senior Vice President of Energy and Transportation Business at GMMCO, highlighted the partnership's potential to help industries transition to sustainable, round-the-clock clean power through GMMCO's pan-India reach.

Market Context

The launch aligns with India's Net Zero 2070 vision and growing demand for renewable energy storage solutions. The systems are positioned to support deeper renewable energy integration and reduce carbon intensity across various industries while building resilient energy infrastructure.

JEM's entry into the battery energy storage market represents a diversification from parent company Jupiter Wagons Limited's traditional focus on railway wagons, locomotives, and commercial vehicles. The company leverages over four decades of experience in mobility solutions and maintains manufacturing facilities across multiple Indian cities.
