Indian Auto LPG Coalition Seeks National Retrofit Policy for Pre-Owned Vehicles

The Indian Auto LPG Coalition has urged the central government to implement a time-bound national retrofit policy enabling certified conversion of in-use petrol and diesel vehicles to Auto LPG.

The industry body highlighted the requirement as annual pre-owned car sales approach 6 million units, with industry projections estimating market growth from 4.6 million units in 2023 to over 10 million units by 2030 at a compound annual growth rate of 12% to 13%. The coalition stated that converting existing internal combustion engine vehicles offers an immediate pathway to cut particulate, hydrocarbon, and nitrogen oxide emissions in non-attainment cities and pollution hotspots like Delhi NCR.

IAC Director General Suyash Gupta noted that Auto LPG provides a running-cost saving of 40% to 45% compared to petrol. Vehicle conversion costs average approximately Rs 30,000 per unit, presenting a lower entry barrier than electric vehicle adoption while utilizing existing fuel distribution infrastructure.
