India's automobile industry recorded an exceptional performance in February 2026, with all major vehicle segments — Passenger Vehicles, Two-Wheelers, and Three-Wheelers posting their highest-ever February sales figures, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on March 13, 2026. Total production across segments touched 28,64,612 units, a robust 22.1% jump over the same month last year.
Domestic Sales: Record February for All Segments
Total domestic sales across all segments reached 23,01,355 units, a 29.8% increase over February 2025.
Passenger Vehicles registered domestic sales of 4,17,705 units — an increase of 10.6% — marking the best-ever February for the segment. Utility Vehicles were once again the growth engine, advancing 13.5% to 2,36,957 units, while Passenger Cars dipped 3.8% to 1,06,799 units. Vans held relatively steady, growing marginally by 1.1% to 11,620 units. (Note: Data for BMW, Mercedes, JLR, and Volvo Auto is not included in these figures, while Tata Motors domestic sales are included.)
Two-Wheelers posted a stellar 35.2% growth in domestic sales, reaching 18,71,406 units. Scooters were the top performer, surging 42.3% to 7,29,774 units — a sign of growing urban demand. Motorcycles rose 30.8% to 10,96,537 units, while Mopeds jumped 34.3% to 45,095 units.
Three-Wheelers registered domestic sales of 74,573 units, a 29.0% increase year-on-year. Passenger Carrier sales rose 30.1% to 60,013 units, while Goods Carrier sales climbed 25.2% to 13,271 units.
Production Surges Across the Board
The industry's production momentum was unmistakable in February. Two-Wheelers, which form the backbone of Indian mobility, led the charge with a staggering output of 23,11,594 units — up 24.4% year-on-year. Within this segment, Scooters saw the sharpest production growth at 30.4%, reaching 7,89,841 units, while Motorcycles grew 22.1% to 14,75,389 units.
Passenger Vehicle production rose 9.8% to 4,43,608 units. Utility Vehicles continued to be the star performer within this category, growing 15.4% to 2,83,391 units, far outpacing Passenger Cars (up a modest 0.7% to 1,47,277 units) and Vans (up 4.2% to 12,940 units).
Three-Wheeler production climbed 29.9% to 1,08,154 units, driven by a 29.0% rise in Passenger Carriers and a 31.4% surge in Goods Carriers. The Quadricycle segment, though small in absolute terms, delivered a striking 257.8% production jump to 1,256 units.
Exports: Strong Growth Across Segments
India's vehicle export performance was equally buoyant. Total exports grew 28.2% to 6,08,284 units in February 2026. Two-Wheeler exports climbed 25.8% to 4,92,414 units, led by Scooters (up 53.3%) and Mopeds (up 68.8%). Motorcycle exports rose a solid 22.1% to 4,22,239 units.
Passenger Vehicle exports grew 34.0% to 75,892 units, with Utility Vehicles up 33.2% and Passenger Cars up a remarkable 36.7%. Three-Wheeler exports surged 49.0% to 38,766 units, with Passenger Carriers alone rising 48.9%. The Quadricycle segment delivered a 369.8% spike in exports to 1,212 units, albeit from a very low base.
Rajesh Menon, Director General of SIAM, expressed cautious optimism about the road ahead. Commenting on the results, he said that positive industry sentiment is continuing, and that the February 2026 results represent record-breaking territory for all three major segments. He noted that while March brings festive demand drivers in several parts of the country, the ongoing conflict in West Asia poses a concern — both for supply chain stability and for export momentum.
Menon added that the industry would be closely watching evolving geopolitical developments, particularly their potential impact on manufacturing processes and global trade flows.
