India's construction equipment sector has been identified as a high-potential, export-oriented industry by the government, with officials highlighting the country's growing presence in global markets and ambitious plans to expand international trade.
Speaking at a session on export competitiveness organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Indian Construction Equipment Manufacturers' Association (ICEMA) during EXCON 2025, Shri Vimal Anand, Joint Secretary at the Department of Commerce, commended the sector's strong performance in international markets.
Anand revealed that India is currently in trade agreement negotiations with several countries, including Chile, Peru, Canada, MERCOSUR, Mexico, and the Maldives. "The government is committed to concluding these trade agreements within a span of one year," he stated, urging manufacturers to capitalize on these frameworks to boost exports.
The scale of India's construction equipment exports is significant. According to Deepak Shetty, Chairman of CII's Council on Manufacturing Excellence and President of ICEMA, Indian construction equipment is now exported to more than 135 countries, demonstrating the sector's manufacturing capabilities and quality standards.
Industry experts highlighted India's competitive advantages. Ajit Pai from Ernst & Young noted that the country's construction equipment industry is growing faster than those in other major economies, with exports increasing at more than double the rate of the domestic market.
The EXCON event showcased innovations in the sector, from advanced digital machinery to sustainable and energy-efficient equipment. Ramesh Palagiri, President Designate of ICEMA, emphasized that these developments position India as not merely a manufacturer but as an innovator shaping future construction technologies.
Looking ahead, government officials outlined ambitious manufacturing targets. Neeraj Huddar from NITI Aayog stated that achieving India's goal of a $5.1 trillion manufacturing GDP will require strategic deployment of advanced technologies and targeted policy support in key sectors.
The session brought together stakeholders from government, industry, and academia to discuss strategies for strengthening India's position as a global manufacturing and export hub in the construction equipment sector.
