Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has deployed Nawgati’s AI-enabled vehicle recognition and hydrotest compliance system at key CNG stations in Delhi to verify cylinder certification before refuelling, following recent Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) directives requiring city gas distribution companies to enforce safety standards at CNG pumps.
PESO Joint Chief Controller of Explosives (North Circle) Sanjay Kumar Singh inaugurated the rollout at the Shantipath CNG station in New Delhi.
The system connects to the online PESO portal through an automated verification pipeline. If a cylinder’s certification has expired or is invalid, alerts are sent to station staff through handheld devices, LED displays and public announcement systems, which stops unverified vehicles from refuelling, according to IGL.
Nawgati’s verification strategy has three components:
- Nawgati Fuelling App: A consumer-facing app that lets vehicle owners track their hydrotest status and display their compliance pass before refuelling.
- Aaveg Compliance App: A tool for station staff and queue marshals to run real-time handheld checks on vehicles waiting in queues.
- Aaveg System: Nawgati’s proprietary technology scans all license plates at the station and displays hydrotest status on an LED screen.
IGL plans to expand the deployment to more outlets across Delhi-NCR.
Ambuj Singh, Senior Vice President (Business and Operations), Nawgati, said, “Fuel retail safety relies on robust enforcement and friction-free technology. Having senior leadership inaugurate this rollout at IGL Shantipath is a testament to the urgency and impact of our solution. By combining our proprietary technology, the Aaveg Compliance app for queue marshals, and consumer-facing transparency through the Nawgati app, we are helping operators eliminate manual blind spots, prevent unverified cylinders from refuelling, and set a new benchmark for smart infrastructure safety.”
The PESO official also inaugurated other IGL safety initiatives. These include a public awareness campaign across FM radio, print media, social media and station posters on timely hydrotesting and safe refuelling practices. IGL has also introduced a strengthened Safety Management Action Plan to enforce operational accountability and detect illegal cylinder modifications.
IGL leadership said digital safety systems are important as India aims to raise natural gas to a 15% share of its national energy basket and prepares infrastructure for future hydrogen blending.
Nawgati is an Indian fuel-tech platform that provides technology for fuel station operations and fleet management. It also runs a fuelling app for drivers. Its platform, Aaveg, uses deep learning and real-time analytics to reduce congestion and improve operational efficiency. The company is expanding to the UAE and Sri Lanka.
