Hyundai Targets 50% Electrified Vehicle Mix in India by 2030
Eight hybrid models, five EVs and entry into new segments will underpin the carmaker’s electrification push.
Electrified vehicles are expected to account for 50% of Hyundai Motor Company’s sales in India by 2030, compared with the carmaker’s estimate of around 30% penetration for the country’s overall passenger vehicle market.
“Electrified vehicles reach half of our mix there by 2030, against 30% for the market as a whole,” José Muñoz, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, said during the India section of the company’s 2026 CEO Investor Day.
Hyundai did not specify how the targeted share would be divided between battery-electric vehicles, hybrids and other electrified powertrains. Its product roadmap, however, indicates that both EVs and hybrids will play a significant role in reaching the target.
Hyundai Motor India plans to introduce eight hybrid models by FY2030, while expanding its electric portfolio to five models. These will form part of the 26 launches planned through the end of the decade, including new models, full-model changes, derivatives and product enhancements.
Autocar Professional had exclusively reported that Hyundai’s hybrid entry is expected to be led by a new three-row SUV internally codenamed Ni1i. Positioned above the Alcazar, the model will compete with SUVs such as the Mahindra XUV700 and Tata Safari and is expected to be produced at Hyundai’s Pune plant.
The Ni1i is expected to be followed by the third-generation Creta, internally codenamed SX3, which is also being developed with a hybrid powertrain. The new Creta is expected to offer petrol, diesel and petrol-hybrid options, while the Creta Electric will continue as a separate model line.
Hyundai is also developing a locally manufactured 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine that could support more affordable hybrid applications. The powertrain could eventually be extended to compact and midsize models, taking Hyundai’s hybrid technology beyond its larger SUVs.
The broader programme will enable Hyundai to enter sub-segments where it is not currently represented and increase its addressable market. It will also give the company a wider choice of powertrains as fuel-efficiency regulations become more stringent.
Alongside the hybrid push, Hyundai has confirmed that a new compact electric SUV designed and localised for India is part of its immediate product programme. The model was included among Hyundai’s global launches planned over the next eight months.
The electric SUV will give Hyundai a locally developed offering in a more accessible part of India’s EV market. The company currently sells the Creta Electric and the premium Ioniq 5 in the country.
Reducing EV costs will be central to Hyundai’s ability to expand its presence. The carmaker plans to develop regionally optimised products and lower EV material costs globally by 30% by 2030.
Scott Lee, executive vice-president and head of finance at Hyundai Motor Company, said the company would build scale through regionally optimised EV portfolios, including products developed for emerging markets such as India.
“We will also expand the use of cost-effective batteries, including LFP, and develop next-generation motors and inverters. Through power electronics system development, we aim to reduce EV material costs by 30% by 2030,” Lee said.
The combination of eight hybrids, a wider EV portfolio and products targeting new segments will give Hyundai multiple routes to electrification as it seeks to make electrified vehicles half of its India sales by 2030.
