Hyundai Motor India Tests 4.25 Million Engines Using Zero-Emission Technology

The Cold Bed Engine Testing technology eliminates the use of fuel, coolant, and water in the testing process.

Hyundai Motor India Limited tested over 4.25 million engines using its Cold Bed Engine Testing technology, which eliminates the use of fuel, coolant, and water in the testing process. The company reports that this approach has prevented over 2 million kg of CO₂ emissions and saved approximately $1 million in operational costs.

The Cold Bed Engine Testing system, introduced by HMIL in 2013, uses electricity from renewable sources instead of traditional fuel-based testing methods. All engines manufactured by the company undergo this automated, fuel-free quality testing process.

The Cold Bed Engine Testing process places each manufactured engine in a testing station where an electric motor rotates the crankshaft. High-tech sensors monitor performance parameters including crankshaft angle, engine compression, and chamber pressure to evaluate engine quality without burning fuel.

The system integrates with Industry 4.0 standards and stores test data digitally for future research and development purposes. Smart sensors analyze quality parameters to ensure precision testing without emissions.

HMIL's zero-emission testing approach has generated benefits:

  • Environmental Impact: Elimination of over 2 million kg of CO₂ emissions
  • Cost Savings: Approximately $1 million saved through elimination of fuel and fluid usage
  • Efficiency: Improved testing efficiency by removing manual judgments and enhanced safety compared to traditional methods

Gopalakrishnan CS, Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer at HMIL said, "By successfully testing over 4.25 million engines using zero-emission Cold Bed Engine Testing technology, we have significantly advanced our commitment to eco-friendly manufacturing."

The milestone comes as HMIL celebrates its 30th year of "Make in India, Made for the World" operations. The testing technology represents one component of Hyundai's global strategy to achieve net zero emissions by 2045.

The Cold Bed Engine Testing system ensures that 100% of engines manufactured by HMIL undergo automated quality checks without fuel consumption. The technology allows the company to assess engine performance while maintaining manufacturing quality standards and supporting sustainable production practices.

HMIL continues to develop technologies aimed at creating cleaner and more efficient automotive manufacturing processes as part of its commitment to environmental responsibility and industry innovation.
