Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) reported its highest-ever monthly domestic sales in January 2026, opening the calendar year with record volumes after a period of heightened competitive pressure in the Indian passenger vehicle market.
The company sold 59,107 units in the domestic market, a 9.5 percent year-on-year increase, while total sales, including exports, rose 11.5 percent to a record 73,137 units, HMIL said.
Exports stood at 14,030 units, up 20.9 percent year on year, underscoring the growing contribution of overseas markets and India’s role in Hyundai’s global manufacturing and supply network.
The January numbers are released as Hyundai seeks to accelerate domestic volumes, led by compact vehicles Venue and Aura, with support from the recent GST cut. This is after the South Korean major slipped to fourth position in the passenger vehicle market in 2025, as Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors strengthened their positions on sustained SUV-led growth.
Commenting on the performance, Tarun Garg said the January numbers reflected a more balanced start to the year. “The strong domestic performance, along with continued momentum in exports, reflects a more balanced volume mix as we enter 2026.”
On the product front, the Venue compact SUV and Aura compact sedan recorded their highest-ever monthly sales at 12,413 units and 7,978 units, respectively, contributing meaningfully to domestic volumes.
The record January performance was achieved early in Garg’s tenure as Hyundai Motor India’s first Indian Managing Director and CEO, as the company balances domestic recovery with export volume growth.
While a single month does not establish a trend, Hyundai’s January sales performance provides an early data point as the automaker works to regain its position amid sustained competition from Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, and other volume-focused players in the Indian passenger vehicle market.
