Hyundai Motor India has launched the Hyundai Traffic Quality Index (TQI) in association with Radio Mirchi, introducing a standardised, colour-coded system to indicate traffic conditions across seven Indian cities.
The TQI has been launched in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune and Kolkata. The system combines real-time traffic data, Radio Mirchi’s on-ground intelligence and traffic authority advisories to provide commuters with traffic information before and during their journeys.
The index rates traffic conditions on a scale of 1 to 10 and uses three colour categories. Ratings of 1-3 indicate green or light traffic, 4-7 indicate yellow or moderate traffic, while 8-10 indicate red or heavy traffic.
How Does Hyundai Traffic Quality Index Work?
The TQI draws information from several sources, including live traffic tracking, Radio Mirchi’s city-wide on-ground intelligence network and official traffic authority advisories. Road closure and diversion updates, along with notifications on special movements and planned civic or infrastructure activity, are also included.
Traffic updates will be broadcast through Radio Mirchi’s programming network, allowing drivers to receive the information without interacting with mobile devices while driving.
According to Hyundai Motor India head of marketing Virat Khullar, the system is intended to provide commuters with information that can be used to plan journeys and respond to traffic conditions. “With the Hyundai Traffic Quality Index, we are taking that commitment a step further by empowering commuters with actionable information.”
Hyundai Traffic Quality Index Rating System
| Traffic Rating | Colour Code | Traffic Condition |
|---|---|---|
| 1-3 | Green | Light Traffic |
| 4-7 | Yellow | Moderate Traffic |
| 8-10 | Red | Heavy Traffic |
The company said the rating is intended to give commuters a standardised way of interpreting prevailing traffic conditions. The system can be used to anticipate congestion hotspots, consider alternate routes and make mobility decisions based on available traffic information.
Hyundai said the initiative could be expanded to additional cities as it evolves. The partners also plan to develop its data capabilities and introduce additional formats for providing real-time traffic information.
