Hyundai, JLR exploring bio-based faux leather for future models

New York based startup Uncaged’s bio-based faux leather is expected to Look, Feel, and Smell almost as real as traditional synthetic materials.

Hyundai is exploring a new generation of sustainable materials for its future models.  The Korean brand, through its Cradle innovation arm, is working with New York–based startup Uncaged Innovations, which has developed plant-based faux leather that not only looks and feels like the real thing, but also mimics its signature scent. Jaguar Land Rover is reportedly evaluating the material as well, according to Techcrunch.com

Unlike typical synthetic leathers that rely on petroleum-based plastics, Uncaged’s solution is derived largely from wheat, soy, and corn proteins. These proteins are engineered to replicate the fibrous structure of animal hides, resulting in a more authentic texture. The startup claims its process cuts the carbon footprint of leather by 95 percent compared with traditional methods.

Durability is the main challenge, given that automotive upholstery faces harsher conditions than consumer goods like handbags or shoes. Heat resistance has been a focus: “One of the automotive companies wants us to be at 95°C for 500 hours,” said Stephanie Downs, Uncaged’s co-founder and CEO. “We’ve already reached 85°C for 500 hours in our first round of testing.” Automakers are also exploring the possibility of bespoke “signature scents” for their interiors.

Beyond sustainability, Uncaged’s approach addresses cost and waste. Producing a leather car interior typically requires multiple cowhides, much of which is discarded due to blemishes. Uncaged’s sheets are consistent in quality, minimize waste, and are currently priced under $10 per square foot in small orders—potentially making them cheaper than genuine leather at scale.

If the tests prove successful, drivers may soon find themselves in vehicles with interiors that rival or even surpass traditional leather in realism, while being more sustainable and cost-efficient.

As far as new launches go, Hyundai is gearing up to  introduce multiple new models in India including the next-gen Venue that debuts on October 24, 2025.
