Honda Expands Two-Wheeler Production Capacity at Tapukara Plant

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI) has announced plans to expand its manufacturing capacity with the addition of a third production line at its Tapukara plant in Alwar district, production line, as part of its strategy to address rising demand in the two-wheeler segment.

The new production line is scheduled to begin operations in 2028 with an annual capacity of 670,000 units. Following this expansion, the total production capacity of the Tapukara facility will increase to 2.01 million units per year. The project is also expected to generate more than 2,000 jobs in the region.

Tsutsumu Otani, President and CEO of HMSI, said the expansion is aimed at strengthening the company’s production ecosystem and improving its ability to respond to market demand. He added that the move would support long-term growth and enhance supply chain flexibility.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma said the investment would contribute to the state’s manufacturing ecosystem and employment generation, while reinforcing its position as a destination for industrial development.

HMSI currently operates four manufacturing plants in India with a combined annual capacity of 6.25 million units. The company has produced over 70 million two-wheelers in the country since commencing operations in 2001.

In addition to the Tapukara expansion, HMSI is also setting up a fourth production line at its Vithalapur plant in Gujarat, which is expected to begin operations in 2027.

The Tapukara facility, which began operations in 2011 with an initial capacity of 600,000 units, has undergone multiple capacity enhancements over the years. It currently has an annual capacity of 1.3 million units, with incremental improvements planned to reach 1.34 million units by FY2026 through automation and efficiency measures.

HMSI plans to invest approximately ₹15 billion in the new production line, which will be designed to manufacture commuter motorcycles and scooters. The company will also acquire 73,700 square metres of land at Tapukara to support this expansion.

With the addition of the new line and other planned expansions, HMSI’s total annual production capacity in India is projected to increase to around 8 million units by FY2028.

The company said it continues to align its operations with its global target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, including the use of renewable energy and resource conservation practices across its manufacturing facilities.
