Hindustan Zinc Limited flagged off a fleet of 40 electric bulker trucks on October 8, 2025, marking a significant expansion of the company's sustainable logistics operations. The vehicles are being deployed in partnership with Enviiiro Wheels Mobility Pvt. Ltd. under an eight-year contract.
The electric bulkers will transport calcine, a byproduct of the zinc roasting process, from the company's Zinc Smelter in Udaipur to its integrated zinc-lead smelter facility in Chittorgarh. Ten vehicles have already been deployed, with the remaining units scheduled to roll out over the coming months.
The deployment is part of Hindustan Zinc's broader sustainability strategy aimed at achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The company, which is the world's largest integrated zinc producer and among the top five global silver producers, stated that the electric fleet is expected to reduce logistics-related carbon emissions while improving operational safety and efficiency.
Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, said the initiative reflects the company's commitment to embedding sustainability into its logistics operations. "These electric mobility solutions are not just reducing our carbon footprint, but also unlocking operational efficiency, workforce safety, and long-term value," he said in a statement.
On the same day, Hindustan Zinc also signed a memorandum of understanding with Enviiiro Wheels Mobility to deploy electric buses for employee transportation at its Udaipur smelter facility. The shift from diesel-powered buses is intended to further reduce emissions while providing a cleaner commute for workers.
The electric bulker initiative builds on Hindustan Zinc's existing fleet of liquefied natural gas and battery-powered trucks. The company has also undertaken other carbon reduction measures, including signing a 530-megawatt renewable energy agreement and investing in energy efficiency projects such as turbine upgrades and variable frequency drive installations.
Hindustan Zinc became the first Indian company to join the International Council on Mining & Metals in 2025 and holds validated Science Based Targets Initiative targets aligned with the 1.5°C global warming threshold. The company was recognized among the top 1 percent in the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook for the second consecutive year.
