The Hinduja Group, a global conglomerate with deep roots in the automotive sector, is significantly scaling its corporate social responsibility (CSR) investments through the Ashok Leyland Foundation. Over the past decade, the group has cumulatively invested between Rs 210- 220 crore  in its flagship social initiatives, moving beyond simple compliance to a structured, independent impact model.

While Ashok Leyland’s annual CSR spend typically averages around ₹40 crore, the group is projected to increase its layout to ₹60 crore this year to facilitate large-scale expansions in states such as Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir. This financial trajectory supports a long-term roadmap to reach 1 million children by 2029, up from the current reach of over 6.26 lakh lives.

To manage this scale, the group transitioned its social initiatives into the Ashok Leyland Foundation, an independent entity designed to attract specialized talent and potential third-party funding from like-minded organizations. This structural shift allows the foundation to operate with independent focus while remaining deeply embedded in the group’s corporate framework.

The foundation’s strategy is anchored by two primary programs: Road to School (RTS) and Road to Livelihood (RTL). These initiatives utilize a “block saturation model,” wherein every government school within a specific geographic block is covered to ensure no child is left behind.

Key performance indicators (KPIs) demonstrated a measurable return on social investment, the officials stated during a press conference on Tuesday. T Sasikumar, Chief Operating Officer, Ashok Leyland Foundation, N V Balachander, Director - Ashok Leyland Foundation and Girish, Project Director, Learning Links Foundation addressed the conference.

Some of the indicators mentioned by the executives were -  Academic Improvement: A 25-30% increase in foundational literacy and numeracy levels among primary students; Transition Rates: 98% of students in the program transitioned from middle to secondary school and Higher Education: Roughly 85% of Grade 12 students in the program moved on to higher education, with a notable 59% of female students choosing STEM programs.

The Hinduja Group has strategically deployed these programs in challenging terrains, including the Kohi Hills tribal region in Sothern India  and the interior villages of Dal Lake in Jammu & Kashmir, up in Northern India.

In Jammu & Kashmir, the foundation claims to be the only corporate entity operating in these remote lake-bound villages, where access is primarily limited to narrow wooden plank roads or boats.

Furthermore, the foundation serves as a hub for intra-group synergy. While Ashok Leyland provides the bulk of the funding, other entities such as Hinduja Leyland Finance, Hinduja Tech, and others are also included in the initiative. Environmental and water management projects, such as lake regeneration and springshed management in Alwar and Nainital, are executed in collaboration with the Hinduja Foundation through its "Jal Jeevan" initiative.
