GreenCell Mobility Secures 1,200 Electric Bus Order Under PM E-Bus Sewa Scheme
Government initiative to expand electric public transport sees major contract awarded across Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh cities
GreenCell Mobility has secured an order for over 1,200 electric buses from Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) under the PM E-Bus Sewa Scheme, according to an announcement made on May 14, 2025. The company received a Letter of Award for 472 Eicher electric buses in Madhya Pradesh and 750 buses from Pinnacle Mobility Solutions in Andhra Pradesh.
The electric buses will be deployed across 6 cities in Madhya Pradesh and 11 cities in Andhra Pradesh. GreenCell Mobility has partnered with VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV) for the Madhya Pradesh deployment and with Pinnacle Mobility Solutions (EKA Mobility) for the Andhra Pradesh project.
Devndra Chawla, MD & CEO of GreenCell Mobility, stated that these projects represent a significant milestone in the company's mission to transform mass mobility through zero-emission electric buses. The company is also developing necessary charging infrastructure to support these deployments.
GreenCell currently operates 900 electric buses in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra. The new contracts will expand its operations to two additional states, furthering its commitment to electrifying public transport across India.
Vinod Aggarwal, MD & CEO of VE Commercial Vehicles, noted that their Eicher electric buses have already traveled 1.4 crore kilometers across India. Dr. Sudhir Mehta, Founder & Chairman of EKA Mobility & Pinnacle Industries Limited, described the partnership as a significant step toward building sustainable cities.
The PM E-Bus Sewa Scheme forms part of the central government's initiative to deploy 10,000 electric buses nationwide, supporting India's mission to electrify public transport. In the 2024-25 financial year, CESL introduced a tender for 4,588 electric buses under this scheme.
India has been accelerating its transition to electric mobility as part of broader climate commitments. The transportation sector accounts for approximately 13% of India's carbon emissions, with public transportation being a key focus area for electrification efforts. The government has implemented various policies and incentives to promote electric vehicle adoption, including the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME) scheme.
GreenCell Mobility, backed by climate impact investor Eversource Capital, focuses on providing Electric Mobility-as-a-Service. The company's electric buses feature a range exceeding 250 kilometers per charge, fast-charging capability, and zero tailpipe emissions, contributing to reduced urban air pollution.
The adoption of electric buses in public transportation is expected to help India reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels while addressing urban air quality concerns. According to industry estimates, each electric bus can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 100 tons annually compared to conventional diesel buses.
