Greaves Electric Mobility Limited (GEML) has announced plans to launch a new electric scooter under its Ampere brand, targeting the sub-₹1 lakh price segment — currently the largest volume category in India's scooter market and one that remains dominated by petrol-powered vehicles. The product, referred to as the Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter, is scheduled for release in FY27.
The company has positioned the upcoming model as a direct alternative to high-selling internal combustion engine (ICE) scooters in the entry-level category. GEML says the scooter is being engineered to deliver higher torque than comparable petrol models, improved gradeability on inclines, and a reduction in running costs of up to 50% compared to ICE alternatives. The vehicle is also described as a software-defined product with over-the-air (OTA) update capability, AI/ML-enabled connectivity, and remote diagnostics.
Vikas Singh, Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer of Greaves Electric Mobility, said the launch reflects a deliberate focus on high-volume, commercially viable segments. "The sub-₹1 lakh category represents the single largest volume opportunity in India's scooter market, yet remains ICE-led," Singh said. "With Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter, we are entering the E2W market with a clear sight of competing with the largest selling ICE product offering."
GEML currently has more than three lakh vehicles on Indian roads, supported by over 400 service touchpoints and three manufacturing facilities in Hyderabad, Noida, and Ranipet. The company said it continues to pursue what it describes as scalable, contribution-positive growth.
The announcement adds to Ampere's existing electric scooter lineup and is intended to broaden the brand's appeal among first-time EV buyers. All specifications cited by the company are described as provisional and subject to change before the final product launch.
Greaves Electric Mobility is a subsidiary of Greaves Cotton Limited and has filed a draft red herring prospectus with SEBI as part of a proposed initial public offering.
