TruAlt Bioenergy Limited on Thursday announced that GAIL (India) Limited will invest ₹130 million in its subsidiary, Leafiniti Bioenergy Private Limited, to expand its compressed biogas (CBG) portfolio.

The investment follows a share subscription-cum-shareholders’ agreement signed on August 11, 2025, under which GAIL will acquire a 49% equity stake in Leafiniti, while TruAlt will retain a majority 51% stake. The capital infusion will be deployed towards the development of new CBG projects, with investments aligned to phased project approvals and governance mechanisms.

The partnership aims to combine TruAlt’s bioenergy production capabilities with GAIL’s gas infrastructure and market reach to scale CBG capacity in India. The joint venture plans to establish multiple greenfield plants across Karnataka, Maharashtra and Odisha as part of a phased rollout.

In the first phase, six greenfield plants with a capacity of 12 tonnes per day each will be set up, primarily using agricultural residues from sugar mills. These facilities are expected to produce a combined annual output of 23,976 tonnes of CBG.

The project is also expected to generate between 820 and 1,225 direct and indirect jobs, while producing by-products such as 97,902 tonnes of fermented organic manure (FOM) and 470,862 tonnes of liquid fermented organic manure (LFOM) annually, supporting soil health and circular agriculture practices.

From an environmental standpoint, the first phase is projected to displace around 19,800 tonnes of fossil fuels annually and reduce methane emissions by approximately 9,300 tonnes per year.

Executives from both companies said the collaboration aligns with India’s efforts to strengthen energy security, reduce dependence on natural gas imports, and expand the role of clean fuels in the energy mix. The initiative is also positioned to support broader policy efforts to scale up CBG production under government-backed programmes.

TruAlt Bioenergy Limited said the partnership marks a step towards building a distributed and circular energy ecosystem, integrating clean fuel production with rural economic development and agricultural value chains.
