FADA: Passenger Vehicle Retails Cross 4 Lakh Units as Stock Levels Rise

July car registrations jump 19% year on year while dealer inventory climbs to 35 days ahead of festive season.

Passenger vehicle retail registrations crossed the 4-lakh mark for the first time in any July, rising 19.13% year on year to 4,16,555 units, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Rural passenger vehicle sales led the expansion with a 24.72% increase, compared to a 15.76% gain in urban markets.

Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors Lead July PV Sales Chart

Maruti Suzuki maintained its market leadership with 1,61,873 units, capturing a 38.86% share. Tata Motors secured second place with 58,774 units and a 14.11% share, narrowly ahead of Mahindra & Mahindra at 56,219 units and a 13.50% share. Hyundai Motor India followed with 47,853 units, holding an 11.49% market share.

Overall Auto Retail Sales Grow 26% YoY, Best-Ever July

Fada also reported that Indian automobile retail sales grew 25.89% year on year in July 2026 to 25,91,138 units, marking the first time in history that every vehicle category achieved its highest-ever July volume.

Dealer Inventory Rises to 35 Days Ahead of Festive Season

Despite the volume expansion, passenger vehicle inventory increased to 33-35 days, higher than FADA's recommended 21-day benchmark. FADA urged vehicle manufacturers to calibrate factory dispatches strictly with actual retail demand to prevent capital from getting locked in aged inventory as festive stocking begins.
